[Edaily Reporter SOYEON KIM ] Samsung Electronics and LGELECTRONICS are set to fully participate in the government’s “heating electrification” policy, spearheaded by heat pumps. The companies aim to reduce carbon emissions in residential spaces by replacing fossil-fuel-powered boilers in homes with high-efficiency heat pumps and integrating them with solar power and energy storage systems (ESS). Both companies plan to expand the related ecosystem domestically while also targeting the global market in the future.

On the 7th, SamsungElectronics and LGELECTRONICS participated in the “Korean Green Transformation (K-GX) Strategy Public Briefing” held at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Jung-gu, Seoul, where they unveiled their mid- to long-term strategies for the electrification of residential heating and carbon reduction.

◇ SamsungElectroMechanics to Promote ‘Electrification of Apartment Heating and Cooling’ Based on Residential Environment Demonstrations
SamsungElectronics plans to establish a domestic supply base for its “EHS All-in-One” system and expand the business in phases. On that day, Park Seung-hee, President of Corporate Responsibility (CR) at SamsungElectronics, unveiled a detailed business roadmap under the theme “Proposal for Apartment Heating and Cooling Heat Pumps for Carbon-Free Residential Innovation.”

President Park stated, “In line with the government’s policy on the electrification of heating, we plan to establish a domestic supply base by 2027 and begin full-scale nationwide deployment in 2028–2029.” She added, “Starting in 2030, we will expand our global business—including into Europe—based on the technology and deployment experience we have accumulated in Korea.”

SamsungElectronics’ “EHS All-in-One” heat pump is a product that provides air cooling, underfloor heating, and hot water all from a single outdoor unit. It is well-suited to Korea’s climate, which features four distinct seasons, and its residential culture centered on ondol (underfloor heating). Furthermore, considering the limited space available for outdoor unit installation in apartment buildings, the design significantly improves space utilization.

It incorporates “heat recovery” technology, which was previously used primarily in HVAC systems for large buildings. By recovering waste heat emitted during summer cooling operations and reusing it to produce hot water, the system reduces the energy consumption required for hot water supply. Users can monitor and remotely control heating, cooling, and hot water status in real time via SamsungElectronics’ SmartThings platform. SamsungElectronics plans to expand integration with solar power and energy storage systems (ESS) in the future to help manage household energy usage.

SamsungElectronics is currently conducting field tests in various environments prior to the product’s launch. Since August, the company has been conducting comprehensive verification of the EHS All-in-One system in an actual single-family home in Donam-dong, Jeju City. At the SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION Residential Performance Research Institute in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, the company has recreated an environment identical to that of an apartment complex and is analyzing detailed measurement data, such as power consumption and operating noise.

◇ LG Corp. Expands Heat Pump-Based ‘Energy-Self-Sufficient Housing Model’
LGELECTRONICS has unveiled a strategy centered on heat pumps to comprehensively manage everything from energy production to storage and consumption in residential spaces. Lee Jae-sung, President of LGELECTRONICS’ ES Business Division, emphasized on the same day, “Energy optimization—which involves transitioning from fossil fuel-based heating systems to high-efficiency heat pumps and integrating the management of energy production, storage, and consumption—is the core of residential GX.”

A prime example is the “Smart Cottage,” an energy-self-sufficient modular home that integrates heat pumps, home appliances, a Home Energy Management System (HEMS), an Energy Storage System (ESS), and solar power generation into a single platform. LGELECTRONICS plans to participate in projects such as the development of energy-self-sufficient residential complexes within Distributed Energy Special Zones based on the Smart Cottage.

The company will also expand its domestic heat pump production base, centered on its Changwon plant. In the long term, the goal is to standardize the transition to heat pumps and energy management methods across different housing types, broadening the scope of application from public rental housing to both newly constructed and existing apartment complexes, and to promote the adoption of energy-self-sufficient “Net Zero” residential complex models.

LGELECTRONICS is already expanding its business in the domestic residential heat pump market. In the “2026 Jeju Heat Pump Deployment Project in Daily Life”—a flagship government initiative for heating electrification—the company secured the largest volume among participating contractors, handling 877 out of a total of 2,460 households.

Its flagship product, the “LG Therma V Heat Pump Boiler,” is a high-efficiency solution that utilizes air heat to produce thermal energy equivalent to 4 to 5 times the amount of electricity consumed. LGELECTRONICS has been operating its heat pump system boiler business in Korea since 2011 and, in 2018, became the first domestic manufacturer to supply integrated residential heat pump system boilers.

The company is also expanding its scope to include multi-family housing. LGELECTRONICS is conducting a demonstration project on the electrification of heating, cooling, and hot water systems in an apartment complex occupied by actual residents, in collaboration with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, the Jeju Development Corporation, and the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology. Based on the operational data collected from this project, the company plans to develop a so-called “boiler-free apartment” model that can be applied to public rental housing, retrofits of existing buildings, and new construction projects.
