AI Cell Twin is KTCorporation’s network digital twin platform that faithfully replicates an actual wireless network in a digital virtual space. It allows for the pre-testing of various network operation scenarios by arbitrarily configuring mobile usage patterns and traffic changes within a virtual communication environment.

The “Wireless Network Autonomous Operation Technology,” jointly developed by the two companies, utilizes the AI Cell Twin environment to have AI derive and pre-validate optimal network operation plans before applying them to the actual commercial network.

While existing operational automation methods simply followed predetermined criteria or individual metrics, this technology identifies the optimal solution by comprehensively analyzing complex information such as user distribution, usage patterns, network status, and perceived quality.

Starting last July, the two companies spent approximately three months building an AI cell twin and training the AI model based on wireless network data collected at KTCorporation Wiz Park in Suwon.

Baseball stadiums are considered an ideal environment for demonstrating autonomous operation technology, as traffic fluctuates dramatically depending on the time of day due to large crowds, entry and exit flows, and high-volume video viewing and sharing, often leading to frequent overloads in specific areas.

When the trained AI autonomous operation technology was applied to actual games at KT Wiz Park, traffic that had previously been concentrated on specific base stations was successfully distributed to surrounding base stations. Traffic imbalance between base stations improved by up to 34%, and the load on specific base stations decreased by up to 16%. Notably, the AI Cell Twin’s predictive results showed a high degree of consistency with actual on-site observation data.

The two companies plan to continue demonstrating this technology during the ongoing postseason (fall baseball) games, while also expanding its application to various high-density environments in the future.

Jeong Jin-guk, Executive Vice President and Head of the Next-Generation Communications Research Center at SamsungElectronics Research, stated, “Through pre-validation using digital twins, we have developed next-generation technology that allows us to immediately apply optimization measures to the actual network.” He added, “We will lead innovation in the future telecommunications market by simultaneously improving network operational efficiency and user-perceived quality.”

Lee Jong-sik, Executive Vice President and Head of the Future Network Lab at KTCorporation’s Network Division, said, “This demonstration has proven the feasibility of applying AI cell twin-based autonomous operation technology to commercial networks.” He added, “By further advancing this technology, we will proactively respond to the rapidly changing telecommunications environment and complete an autonomous operation network that provides the best possible quality to our customers.”
