Buoyed by positive reviews from French media and audiences, “Hope” achieved significant box office success, once again demonstrating the intense global interest that has followed the film since its premiere at the 79th Cannes Film Festival.
“Hope” opened on 192 screens across France, generating approximately $800,000 in opening-weekend revenue. Notably, on Saturday, October 31—the opening weekend—it ranked second at the box office in Paris, a key market accounting for 31% of France’s total box office revenue, demonstrating strong performance.
The momentum of “Hope,” which demonstrated its box office potential in major French cities, continued in Belgium as well. Released on 38 screens in Belgium, “Hope” recorded opening weekend earnings of approximately $64,000, significantly outperforming the opening results of “Decision to Leave” and “Burning.” Having made an impressive debut in Belgium following its success in France, “Hope” is set to expand its box office momentum in the European market and continue reaching global audiences.
“Hope” is the first feature film in 10 years from Director Na, known for “The Chaser,” “The Yellow Sea,” and “The Wailing.” Set in the fictional village of Hope Port near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the film tells the story of villagers who, while hunting a massive, unidentified creature that has appeared in their town, come face-to-face with an extraterrestrial entity. The film boasts a stellar cast, featuring actors Hwang Jung-min, Jo In-sung, Jung Ho-yeon, and Eum Moon-seok, alongside Taylor Russell, Cameron Britton, Alicia Vikander, and Michael Fassbender.
