AI Analyzes Sections and Patterns of Degraded Communication Quality to Take Proactive Measures
"We Will Enhance Cooperation on Core AI-RAN Technologies to Improve Perceived Quality"
[E-Daily Reporter Yun Junghoon ]KTCorporation(030200)and SamsungElectronics(005930)have successfully used AI (artificial intelligence) technology to improve the decline in communication quality that occurs while traveling on high-speed rail.
KTCorporation announced on the 5th that it has developed and completed field testing of high-speed rail wireless network optimization technology in collaboration with SamsungElectronics.

AI Precisely Targets Sections with Base Station Connection Delays
In a high-speed rail environment traveling at speeds exceeding 250 km/h, base station signals fluctuate rapidly, causing frequent handoffs between base stations. If the handover does not occur in a timely manner during this process, data transmission delays or dropped calls can occur.
Previously, companies relied on on-site measurement results to take piecemeal measures on a per-base-station basis. In contrast, the two companies have now introduced a method that uses AI to precisely analyze large-scale data—such as signal strength and interference history—collected along high-speed rail routes.
The analysis revealed that delays in switching from one base station to the next during high-speed travel were the primary cause of communication interruptions inside train cars. Consequently, the two companies identified sections where the problem recurred and applied technology to bring forward the handover timing, ensuring connections between base stations occur more quickly than before.
◇ Gyeongbu Line Pilot Test Shows 29% Reduction in Disconnection Rate… “Continued AI-RAN Collaboration”
The pilot test was conducted in the areas of Godeok-myeon, Pyeongtaek-si, and Maesong-myeon, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi Province, along the Gyeongbu Line high-speed rail route. A comparison of data before and after the technology’s implementation showed that the rate of communication dropouts while in motion decreased by approximately 29%. This means that the number of dropouts, which was previously 100, was reduced to about 71.
Based on the results of this pilot, KTCorporation is reviewing plans to actually implement the technology in the high-speed rail commercial network. Furthermore, the company plans to continue collaborating with SamsungElectronics in the field of AI-based wireless access networks (AI-RAN) to jointly validate technologies that improve network quality.
Jeong Jin-guk, Executive Vice President and Head of the Next-Generation Communications Research Center at Samsung Research, SamsungElectronics, stated, “We have demonstrated that we can improve perceived communication quality even in high-speed mobile environments,” adding, “Together with KTCorporation, we will lead the development of user-centric core AI-RAN technologies.”
Lee Jong-sik, Executive Vice President and Head of the Future Network Lab at KTCorporation’s Network Division, remarked, “This demonstration is a meaningful achievement that confirms the potential to improve perceived quality for customers in areas with poor signal quality, such as high-speed rail lines, by leveraging AI,” adding, “KTCorporation will continue to develop AI-RAN technologies to deliver tangible improvements in perceived quality for customers.”
