“You say we filmed together? This is our first time meeting”… The Bizarre Set of ‘Avengers 5’

[Edaily Reporter YUN GI BACK ] In the movie, they acted as if they were close, but in reality, the actors had never met before. Even after filming wrapped, it’s hard to explain the entire plot. These are behind-the-scenes stories shared by the cast of the Marvel movie *Avengers: Doomsday*, set to be released this December. It seems that even heroes who save the world don’t necessarily know everything—including the exact circumstances or who they’re fighting against.

Alan Cumming, who returns as Nightcrawler, confessed in an interview with a media outlet that he doesn’t fully understand the movie’s plot. It’s amusing to hear this admission from an actor who has already finished filming. While he’s cautious about what he might say for fear of revealing secrets, he admits that, honestly, he doesn’t know the full story himself.
The behind-the-scenes stories he shared are also unique. On a day when they were filming on an outdoor set—away from the blue screen—a crew member approached him and began explaining a scene involving giant robots. Cumming responded by asking them to simply tell him which direction to face, rather than giving a complicated explanation. In other words, even though a massive battle unfolds in the final cut, the scene isn’t actually right in front of the actor.
An even funnier incident took place off set. Cumming met Florence Pugh, who plays Yelena Belova, at the Emmy Awards. Although their characters appear together in a scene involving physical contact, the actors themselves had never actually met until then.
When Cumming mentioned that he had filmed the scene with Pugh’s stunt double, Pugh replied that she, too, had acted opposite Cumming’s stunt double. Although the two characters on screen had already worked closely together, the actual actors’ first meeting took place at the awards ceremony. This moment highlights the filming style of Marvel movies, where actors often meet their stunt doubles before meeting their co-stars.
A story shared by Hayley Atwell, who plays Peggy Carter, raises another question. In an interview last October on the podcast “Binge-Worthy,” she explained that they had tried out and filmed various story arcs, some of which were carried forward or developed further, while others were cut. This means that just because a scene has been filmed doesn’t guarantee it will reach the audience exactly as shot.
Atwell explained that these experiments are part of the process of finding the most convincing choices for the character and their role within the film. While it’s difficult to interpret her remarks as meaning the final cut of the entire film has been finalized, we can infer that the production team kept various possibilities open even during filming.
This filming approach also reflects the Russo brothers’ directing style. Director Joe Russo explained in an interview that they continue to develop the script even during filming. Rather than shooting strictly according to a predetermined plan, they adjust scenes by incorporating ideas from the actors that emerge during rehearsals and improvisation.
From the actors’ perspective, it can be difficult to know how the scenes they’ve filmed will fit into the overall story. They act while imagining robots that aren’t physically present, work with stand-ins instead of their co-stars, and sometimes parts of the footage they’ve shot are cut from the final cut. For the cast as well as the audience, the day they see the finished film is a time when their curiosity is finally satisfied.
