ABB Forms Smart Building IoT Partnership with Samsung Electronics
ABB BuildingPro and Samsung SmartThings Pro Integration
Integrated Management of Building Data, Energy, and Control Functions
Support for the Operation of Commercial Buildings, Including Offices, Retail Stores, and Hotels
PoC to be conducted at three pilot sites this year
[Edaily Reporter Shin Young-bin] Swiss electrification and automation technology company ABB has partnered with #Samsung Electronics to integrate smart building operations with an enterprise Internet of Things (IoT) platform.
ABB announced on the 12th that it has launched an integrated solution linking Samsung Electronics’ enterprise IoT platform, “SmartThings Pro,” with its own building automation solution, “ABB Ability BuildingPro.” (From left) Emre Evinci, Director of Samsung Electronics’ European IoT Business; Seol Hoon, Head of Samsung Electronics’ Consumer Electronics Division in Germany; Mike Mustafa, President of ABB’s Electrification Smart Buildings Division; Mark Zwoner, Vice President of Global Strategic Partnerships for ABB’s Electrification Smart Buildings Division; and Torsten Bocker, Director of Business Development at Samsung Electronics Germany, pose for a commemorative photo. By connecting smart building platforms with IoT platforms, it enables building owners and operators to utilize building data, operational insights, and control functions within a more integrated environment.
This integrated solution was developed as an extension of the strategic partnership signed between ABB and Samsung Electronics in April 2022. At that time, the two companies agreed to collaborate on joint technology development to integrate ABB’s residential and commercial building automation solution, “ABB Pre@Home,” with Samsung SmartThings.
The new solution allows for the management of various operational data within a building through a single environment. Building owners and managers can check building operation status and performance, monitor key data in real time, and utilize control functions for key facilities such as lighting, heating and cooling, shading, and access control.
ABB Ability BuildingPro is a building automation solution that connects various systems, devices, and data within a building. It provides analytics and operational insights through its proprietary platform. Samsung SmartThings Pro extends the functionality of ABB’s solution into the Samsung ecosystem via cloud-to-cloud integration and supports data sharing between the two platforms.
This allows building managers to view data on lighting, HVAC, shading, and access control systems, as well as energy monitoring and occupancy detection, all on a single screen. The companies explain that this enables efficient management of operational performance across various spaces, including offices, retail stores, and large commercial buildings. This enables occupancy-based energy management and centralized monitoring, allowing hotel managers to reduce energy consumption and improve operational efficiency. A phased rollout is also possible, starting with pilot operations in specific zones before expanding.
Guests can use Samsung SmartThings Pro to directly control room lighting, heating and cooling, blinds, and entertainment features via their smartphones. Another key feature is the ability to personalize the room environment throughout their stay without installing a separate app.
Mike Mustafa, President of ABB’s Electrification Smart Buildings Division, stated, “To manage increasingly complex building portfolios more efficiently, reliable data and easy-to-use tools are essential.” He added, “Through the integration of ABB Ability BuildingPro and Samsung SmartThings Pro, we will support managers in making decisions based on more accurate information.”
Park Chan-woo, Vice President of Samsung Electronics’ B2B Integrated Offering Center, said, “Samsung SmartThings Pro is a platform that helps enterprise customers manage and utilize their buildings and assets more efficiently.” He added, “Through the integration with ABB Ability BuildingPro, customers can now access building information and control functions in a connected environment, making day-to-day building operations much simpler.”
ABB and Samsung Electronics will conduct a proof of concept (PoC) for the integrated solution at three pilot sites this year. The locations are the Samsung Business Experience Center in Eschborn, Germany; the Samsung Training Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands; and the ABB branch in Middelfart, Denmark. At each site, they plan to verify improvements in energy efficiency, building performance, and user experience.
Through this collaboration, the two companies plan to lay the groundwork for next-generation commercial buildings by integrating building operations and user experience into a single, connected environment.
