[Edaily Reporter KIM JI-WAN ] SCL Science(246960)announced on the 21st that it has received a decision from the European Patent Office (EPO) to grant a patent covering the design of “InnoSEAL Plus DL.”

With 38 contracting states designated, including the United Kingdom, the company will secure rights in major European countries once the validation procedures in each country are completed. The European Patent Office provides a basis for acquiring rights in 38 contracting states through a single examination process and is known for its strict examinations of novelty and inventive step.

This European patent registration is highly significant as it marks official recognition of the company’s proprietary core technology in Europe—a region with the most stringent regulatory and technical barriers in the global medical device market.

The company stated that this patent registration has enabled it to establish world-class technological credibility and lay a solid foundation for entering the European surgical hemostatic agent market, which is valued at $1 billion (1.4798 trillion won) annually.

SCL Science’s proprietary Class 4 biodegradable hemostatic agent, “InnoSEAL Plus DL.”

Unlike existing fibrin-based hemostatic agents that rely on blood clotting proteins, InnoSEAL Plus DL is based on a new hemostatic mechanism that mimics the molecular structure of mussel adhesive proteins.

Because it relies less on the patient’s blood clotting mechanism, it can demonstrate effective hemostatic performance even in patients taking anticoagulants or those with impaired blood clotting function.

The price, based on the National Health Insurance reimbursement cap, is 239,950 won per patch (11x5 cm). Compared to the price of standard imported fibrin patches—382,395 won (9.5x4.8 cm)—the unit price per area is only about 50% of that, which is a key advantage as it reduces the financial burden on healthcare providers.

This patent recognizes the innovative “multi-layered structure” technology of InnoSeal Plus DL. By ensuring that the two layers bond firmly without the use of any chemical adhesives, the product does not tear or separate during surgery. It adheres strongly to the wound site while remaining completely non-stick to surgical instruments, thereby maximizing surgical convenience.

An SCL Science official stated, “Following the expansion of the approval scope for InnoSeal Plus DL, we have achieved a series of milestones, including passing the review for new medical devices at St. Mary’s Hospital, completing the registration of the in-hospital code, and securing a European patent.” The official added, “Having laid a solid foundation for entering the European market through this patent registration, we will focus all our efforts on ensuring that sales growth expands not only domestically but also internationally.”
