[Edaily Reporter SONG YOUNG-DOO ] Ciers ( SEERS TECHNOLOGY(458870)), a wearable AI diagnostic and monitoring company, announced on the 23rd that the results of a clinical study utilizing its wearable ECG solution, “mobiCARE™,” have been published in the SCI(E)-indexed international journal *Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases*, which specializes in stroke and cerebrovascular diseases.
This study is significant as it is the first in Korea to provide evidence supporting the expansion of mobiCARE’s clinical applications from the field of cardiology to neurology.
The paper, titled “Detection of Atrial Fibrillation in Patients with Embolic Stroke of Undetermined Cause: The AVANT-GARDE Clinical Trial,” is the first prospective, multicenter clinical study in Korea conducted on patients with embolic stroke of undetermined cause (ESUS). Eight domestic medical institutions participated, including Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital of The Catholic University of Korea, Hallym University Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital, Sunchang University Bucheon Hospital, Gachon University Gil Medical Center, Seoul Boramae Medical Center, Inje University Sanggye Paik Hospital, and Chosun University Hospital. The study compared the performance of 72-hour patch-type ECG monitoring with conventional 24-hour Holter monitoring in detecting atrial fibrillation (AF) in 113 patients with acute ischemic stroke.
Atrial fibrillation is a common arrhythmia that causes blood clots and leads to stroke; in patients with ESUS, early detection is considered a critical factor in preventing recurrence and determining anticoagulant therapy.
The study found that the atrial fibrillation detection rate for the 72-hour patch-type ECG was 16.7%, approximately three times higher than the 5.6% rate for conventional 24-hour Holter monitoring. Furthermore, when long-term monitoring was performed six months later on patients in whom atrial fibrillation was not detected during the initial examination, the cumulative detection rate increased to 18.9%. This demonstrated the clinical utility of long-term wearable ECG monitoring by identifying additional cases of atrial fibrillation that had been missed by the initial test.
This study utilized SEERS’ wearable ECG solution, Mobicare. Mobicare is a wearable AI-based arrhythmia diagnostic solution currently used in over 700,000 ECG tests at approximately 1,100 medical institutions in South Korea.
The industry is noting that this study has provided clinical evidence that could expand the scope of Mobicare’s application from cardiology to neurology, where stroke patients are treated. In particular, given that the solution recently obtained U.S. FDA 510(k) clearance, it is expected that clinical data from the neurology field will serve as a competitive advantage during the process of entering global markets, including the United States.
Dr. Kim Yong-jae, Director of Brain Clear Neurology Clinic (former President of the Korean Stroke Society), who led the study, stated, “In patients with cryptogenic embolic stroke, the early detection of atrial fibrillation—which was not identified by conventional tests—is a key factor in preventing recurrence and determining treatment strategies,” and “I hope this study—the first of its kind conducted on Korean patients—will serve as the basis for expanding the use of long-term ECG monitoring in future neurology practice,” he added.
