CJ 4DPLEX, a subsidiary of CJ CGV, announced on the 27th that it had signed a contract with Australia’s largest theater chain, Hoyts Cinemas, to introduce 12 additional ScreenX (SCREENX) auditoriums.
Under this agreement, the number of ScreenX theaters within Hoyts Cinemas will expand to a total of 14, including the existing two. This represents the largest number of ScreenX theaters operated by a single theater chain in Australia and New Zealand.
Hoitz Cinema is the region’s largest single-brand theater chain, operating more than 60 theaters and over 500 screens in Australia and New Zealand, and is leading the local film market by offering a premium viewing experience and a variety of screening formats.
This agreement was finalized based on the successful operation of ScreenX theaters at Melbourne Central and Blacktown, where Hoyts Cinema first introduced the format last year.
In particular, Melbourne Central serves as Hoitz’s flagship theater and is a key hub that caters not only to premium movie-going but also to corporate events and group screenings. Since its opening, the ScreenX theater there has garnered a strong response from local audiences and established itself as a premium, large-scale special-format theater, prompting Hoitz Cinema to decide on further expansion of its ScreenX offerings.
The 12 additional ScreenX theaters will open sequentially through 2028, beginning with Hoyts Broadway in Sydney on the 30th. The first ScreenX theater is scheduled to screen “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” the first-ever Hollywood film produced specifically for ScreenX (“Shot for SCREENX”). Sydney audiences will be among the first to experience “Shot for SCREENX” through “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” at the newly opened ScreenX theaters.
“Shot for SCREENX” is a new production method in which directors, production teams, and CJ Podiplex collaborate closely to incorporate the SCREENX viewing experience from the planning and filming stages. By designing the film with SCREENX in mind from the outset, it creates exclusive scenes and delivers a significantly enhanced sense of immersion.
Damian Kio Hoitz, CEO and President of the Hoitz Group, stated, “The box office success of the ScreenX theaters at Melbourne Central and Blacktown demonstrates growing audience demand for a premium movie-watching experience.” He added, “Given the enthusiastic response to ScreenX from audiences across Australia, we are delighted to expand this premium experience.” He continued, “Immersive cinema is the future of movie-going, and the opening of these 12 new screens is another step toward bringing this experience to more audiences.”
Bang Jun-sik, CEO of CJ Podiplex, said, “The future of movie theaters lies in providing a unique cinematic experience that audiences cannot enjoy at home.”
He continued, “ScreenX is transforming the very nature of storytelling by enveloping audiences with a three-sided screen, and the new ‘Shorts for ScreenX’ format further enhances immersion by allowing filmmakers to produce movies with ScreenX in mind from the planning stage.” CEO Bang added, “We are proud to usher in a new era with *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* and to continue redefining the theater experience by expanding our partnership with Hoyts.”
CJ Podiplex is a global specialist in premium theater formats, developing and operating innovative technologies such as ScreenX and 4DX. It currently operates approximately 1,260 premium large-format screens across 75 countries worldwide, including about 480 ScreenX screens.
Furthermore, the company is continuing the global expansion of ScreenX by establishing partnerships with major global theater chains such as AMC, Cineworld, Cinepolis, Cinemark, and CJ CGV. Moving forward, it plans to expand its collaboration with global theater operators and studios to continue leading the premium movie-viewing market.
