[Edaily Reporter Kwon Oh Seok ] HanyangSecurities announced on the 29th that it has released a financial education resource titled “Leverage Investment Alert” to help investors easily understand the structure and investment precautions of single-stock 2x leveraged ETFs (exchange-traded funds). (Photo: HanyangSecurities) This content explains that a single-stock 2x leveraged ETF is not a product that tracks twice the total return over a given period, but rather is structured to track twice the daily return of the underlying asset. It is designed to provide an easy and intuitive understanding of this concept based on actual data from the listing date of May 27, 2026, through July 22. HanyangSecurities compared and analyzed the closing prices of SamsungElectronics(005930)and SK hynix(000660)during the relevant period against the closing prices of single-stock leveraged ETFs listed in Korea. As a result, while SamsungElectronics’ stock price fell by 15.2%, the average return of the SamsungElectronics single-stock leveraged ETF was -40.2%. Similarly, although SK hynix’s stock price fell by 18.4%, the average return of the SK hynix single-stock leveraged ETF was -49.4%. This demonstrates that, in a structure where daily returns accumulate, the final return of a leveraged ETF may not simply match twice the return of the underlying asset. The content also included a simulation that maintained the daily volatility of the underlying assets during the same period while assuming that the final cumulative return was exactly 0%. The analysis showed that the average return for the SamsungElectronics single-stock leveraged ETF was -14.4%, and the average return for the SK hynix single-stock leveraged ETF was -21.1%. Furthermore, under the assumption that the same volatility persisted for 6 months and 1 year, even if the underlying asset returned to its original level (0%), the 2x leveraged returns averaged -39.8% (SamsungElectronics) and -50.3% (SK hynix) after 6 months. After one year, these figures widened to -63.4% (SamsungElectronics) and -75.4% (SK hynix). This illustrates how the returns on leveraged ETFs can vary significantly as price fluctuations continue. HanyangSecurities plans to release this content through various digital channels, including its YouTube channel “Hanyang Dictionary,” Instagram card news, and TikTok, and will actively utilize it as financial education content for retail customers. A HanyangSecurities official stated, “We will enhance customers’ financial literacy and support sound investment decision-making by clearly and accurately conveying the structure of financial products, including leveraged ETFs, and important investment considerations.”
