[Edaily Reporter JAEMIN SONG ] SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. has returned to a quarterly profit for the first time in seven quarters, driven by expanded sales of high-power batteries, the U.S. Advanced Manufacturing Production Credit (AMPC), and tariff refunds. Even excluding the benefits from the AMPC, the company posted an operating profit of nearly 100 billion won, signaling a recovery in its underlying profitability.

SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. announced on the 30th that it recorded consolidated revenue of 3.7688 trillion won and an operating profit of 203.8 billion won in the second quarter of this year. Revenue increased by 18.5% year-over-year and 5.4% quarter-over-quarter.

Operating profit turned positive after posting losses of 397.8 billion won in the second quarter of last year and 155.6 billion won in the first quarter of this year. This marks SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD.’s first quarterly operating profit in seven quarters, since the third quarter of 2024. The second-quarter operating profit included 107.7 billion won in AMPC benefits resulting from local production in the U.S. Excluding this amount, operating profit stood at 96.1 billion won.

Net income was 471.6 billion won, marking a return to profitability compared to the same period last year and a 740.5% increase from the previous quarter.

By business segment, the battery division recorded revenue of 3.519 trillion won and operating profit of 159.3 billion won. Revenue rose 18.8% year-over-year, and the division returned to profitability. This was driven by increased sales of uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), battery backup units (BBU), high-power batteries for power tools, and batteries for European electric vehicles.

In addition to expanded sales of high-value-added products, profitability improved thanks to AMPC benefits resulting from increased local production in the U.S. and tariff refunds.

The Electronic Materials division posted revenue of 249.8 billion won and an operating profit of 44.5 billion won. These figures represent increases of 14.5% and 34.8%, respectively, compared to the same period last year. Amid steady sales of semiconductor materials, revenue and profitability improved, driven primarily by film materials for foldable smartphones.

SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. posted a cumulative operating profit of 48.2 billion won for the first half of the year, bringing forward the earnings turnaround originally expected for the second half. In the first half, the company’s response to demand from artificial intelligence (AI) data centers—centered on power-grade energy storage systems (ESS) and high-power products for UPS and BBU—drove the improvement in performance.

In the second half of the year, the company plans to prepare for mass production of prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in the U.S. and expand production capacity for UPS and BBU batteries. In Europe, it will increase the supply of batteries for mass-market electric vehicles and pursue new project orders, including LFP batteries.

SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. stated, “Although we had initially anticipated a turnaround in the second half of the year, the timing of our return to profitability was brought forward due to rapid sales growth and improved profitability,” adding, “We will continue to pursue sustainable revenue growth and profitability.”
