[Edaily Reporter JAEMIN SONG ] Construction on the Yongin National Industrial Complex for Advanced System Semiconductors, a project involving an investment of approximately 360 trillion won by SamsungElectronics, is set to begin this month. SamsungElectronics will participate in a local science festival in Yongin to brief residents on the changes expected in the region due to the complex’s development, as well as its plans for energy and water resource management.

The Yongin Cyber Science Festival is a science and culture event in Yongin Special Self-Governing City that attracts approximately 40,000 visitors annually.
To broadly showcase the future of the Yongin National Industrial Complex and the local community, SamsungElectronics has expanded its exhibition from two booths last year to four this year. The exhibition focuses on △ the blueprint for the Yongin National Industrial Complex △ cogeneration energy infrastructure △ and sustainable water resource management.
The Yongin National Industrial Complex development project is also entering the full-scale construction phase. The Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) completed the selection of a contractor for the construction of Section 1 of the National Industrial Complex on the 30th of last month. By moving the relevant schedule up by two months from the original plan, site preparation work can now begin this month.
LH plans to carry out the construction using advanced construction methods to ensure that SamsungElectronics can begin building its first semiconductor production line (fab) in 2028. As previously reported, SamsungElectronics is proceeding with the project with the goal of bringing its first fab online in October 2029.
SamsungElectronics plans to invest approximately 360 trillion won in the Yongin National Industrial Complex. Once the complex is completed, it is projected that approximately 70 companies—including SamsungElectronics itself, as well as firms specializing in materials, parts, and equipment, and fabless companies—will move in. The job creation effect resulting from the investment and the development of the industrial complex is expected to be approximately 1.6 million jobs. The project is also expected to expand essential infrastructure—such as roads, transportation, housing, and cultural and commercial facilities—and revitalize the local economy.
This festival will also showcase ways to share the energy infrastructure being built for semiconductor production with the local community. Three power generation facilities utilizing liquefied natural gas (LNG) are scheduled to be constructed within the National Industrial Complex. The electricity and heat produced there can be used not only in the semiconductor industrial complex but also in nearby apartment complexes, hospitals, schools, and sports and welfare facilities.
Combined heat and power (CHP) is a method that enhances energy efficiency by utilizing the heat generated during electricity production. According to the Korea District Heating Corporation, while the energy efficiency of a typical LNG combined-cycle power plant is about 55%, CHP can increase this to approximately 80%.
A water resource management plan will also be unveiled to ensure a stable supply of water needed for semiconductor production while reducing the burden of new water intakes. SamsungElectronics is collaborating with the government and local authorities to implement a project that involves highly purifying effluent from public wastewater treatment facilities and reusing it as industrial water at its semiconductor plants.
The daily reuse volumes are 120,000 metric tons in Hwaseong, 120,000 metric tons in Osan, and 210,000 metric tons in Suwon. Within the facilities, the company is also reducing water consumption by improving manufacturing processes and recycling used water for cooling towers and air pollution control equipment.
The company is also offering hands-on programs for families. SamsungElectronics will operate quizzes and photo zones featuring “Dalsu,” an otter character symbolizing the restoration of the aquatic ecosystem near its facilities, and will host activities such as assembling semiconductor pop-up books.
