Board of Directors Approves Investment to Establish Japanese Subsidiary in First Half of the Year
Upgraded 20 Years After Opening the Tokyo Branch in 2006
Expectations for Direct Contracts and Revenue Generation Beyond Simple R&D
Possibility of establishing a joint venture with a local company discussed
[Edaily Marketin LEE GEON-EOM Reporter] NOROO PAINT(090350)is establishing a new local subsidiary in Japan and is set to fully enter the Asian market for advanced coatings and high-value-added materials. This strategic move is seen as reflecting strong confidence in identifying clear business opportunities within the Japanese market and in the company’s global expansion potential, as it goes beyond mere technical research and sales support to secure an independent base capable of directly signing contracts and generating revenue. (Photo courtesy of NOROO PAINT) According to a comprehensive report by Edaily on the 3rd, it has been confirmed that NOROO PAINT, following board approval in the first half of this year, has begun the capital investment and related procedures necessary to establish a local subsidiary in Japan. Having already built up local infrastructure through its Japanese branch located in Marunouchi, Tokyo, the company is expected to launch full-scale local operations as soon as all procedures are finalized.
This establishment of a Japanese subsidiary is seen as the culmination of the local research and development (R&D) network and technological exchanges that NOROO PAINT has painstakingly built up over a long period since establishing its branch in 2006. NOROO PAINT’s Japanese branch has faithfully served as a bridgehead for entering the Asian market by monitoring SUNJIN Co., Ltd.’s technology trends and supporting the expansion of group companies’ sales.
Industry observers view the establishment of this subsidiary as particularly significant, given the unique characteristics of the Japanese paint market. Japan is a market firmly dominated by top-tier global coatings companies such as Nippon Paint and Kansai Paint.
While barriers to entry are very high for general-purpose architectural paints, the market also constantly generates demand for “high-value-added functional specialty coatings” and “advanced materials” due to the high level of sophistication in Chonbang industries such as automotive, IT, and electronics.
In the market, NOROO PAINT’s recent investment is being discussed in terms of various potential applications, ranging from upgrading its representative office to a full-fledged corporation to the possibility of establishing a joint venture (JV) with a local company.
While a branch office system is typically sufficient for simple information gathering or liaison tasks, the prevailing view is that launching a legal entity—which requires a massive investment of capital and administrative resources—is a difficult decision to make without confidence in local demand or a solid partnership.
In particular, given the conservative nature of Japan’s business-to-business (B2B) market, it has been suggested that the company may have sought to lower barriers to entry and proactively secure a stable volume of orders through a joint venture with a leading local firm.
All eyes are on whether the establishment of this Japanese subsidiary will serve as a powerful tool for NOROO PAINT’s expansion into the Asian market. The key will be whether the company can enhance its business responsiveness by leveraging its local sales capabilities in Japan and successfully establish high-value-added specialty coatings as a new growth engine for the company.
