Hyundai MARINE & FIRE INSURANCE CO.,LTD announced on the 20th that it is adding the pedal misapplication safety assist device to the list of eligible devices for its “Advanced Safety Device Installation Discount” rider under its auto insurance policies. The pedal misapplication safety assist device detects situations where a driver confuses the accelerator pedal with the brake pedal, causing sudden acceleration, and either suppresses the vehicle’s abnormal acceleration or alerts the driver. It is regarded as effective for traffic safety and pedestrian protection, particularly as the number of elderly drivers continues to rise.
With the addition of the pedal misapplication safety assist system to the existing seven devices—including lane departure warning and prevention systems, Chonbang collision warning and prevention systems, and rear-side collision warning and prevention systems—the total number of advanced safety devices covered by the rider has increased to eight. Hyundai MARINE & FIRE INSURANCE CO.,LTD auto insurance policyholders can receive a 24.1% discount on their premiums based on the number of such advanced safety devices installed in their vehicles. The new rider applies to policies taking effect on or after the 21st.
A Hyundai MARINE & FIRE INSURANCE CO.,LTD spokesperson stated, “As social concern over preventing accidents caused by pedal misapplication grows, the role of insurance companies is expanding beyond accident compensation to include prevention,” adding, “We expect this revision to contribute to the wider adoption of advanced safety features and the establishment of a culture of safe driving.”
