[Edaily Reporter Cho Yong Seok ] Samsung SDI is selling its stake in Samsung Display, valued at 4.4 trillion won, to secure investment funds for future growth engines.

On the 21st, Samsung SDI announced in a regulatory filing that it has decided to transfer shares in Samsung Display worth 4.4 trillion won from its holdings to Samsung Display.

The sale involves 13,088,235 shares—approximately 33% of its total holdings (39,856,654 shares)—with a total value of 4.45 trillion won. If the sale proceeds as planned, Samsung SDI’s stake in Samsung Display will decrease from 15.2% to 10.2%.

The transaction amount will be paid in cash, and the scheduled transfer date is the 27th.

Industry observers expect Samsung SDI to invest the funds raised from the sale into facilities at Synergy Cells, a battery plant currently under construction in New Carlisle, Indiana.

In fact, Samsung SDI has recently been realigning its U.S. production strategy, including acquiring GM’s entire stake (49.99%) in “Synergy Cells”—a joint venture with GM—and taking over ownership.

This sale of shares is interpreted as a confirmation of Samsung SDI’s commitment to continuously expanding investment to build a foundation for mid- to long-term growth, as the company has recently shown an improving trend in its financial performance.

Driven by the recent increase in AI data centers, the company is seeing rising demand for energy storage systems (ESS) and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), while also expanding into new markets such as humanoid robots and aerospace. The proceeds from the sale are also expected to be used for investments in lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and all-solid-state battery production lines.

An industry official stated, “Samsung SDI is expected to be able to make aggressive investments for future growth using the cash secured through this transaction,” adding, “It will also have a positive effect in terms of financial soundness.”

Samsung SDI defied market expectations of a loss in the second quarter of this year and successfully returned to profitability for the first time in seven quarters. On a consolidated basis, operating profit for the second quarter reached 203.8 billion won, while revenue totaled 3.7688 trillion won, an 18.5% increase from the same period last year.
