In episodes 7 and 8 of the SBS Friday-Saturday drama “Chaebol X Detective 2,” which aired on the 28th and 29th, Son Woo-hyun played a dual role as magician Park Jae-ha and his twin brother, engineer Park Jae-hyung. Episode 8 recorded a nationwide household viewership rating of 7.9% (Nielsen Korea), setting a new series high.
In these episodes, Son Woo-hyun was depicted as having died while engulfed in flames inside a coffin during a spectacular escape act on stage; however, he actually played Park Jae-ha, who was at the center of the case, attempting to assume a new identity using the body of his already deceased older brother, Park Jae-hyung. Son Woo-hyun brought both characters to life, not only revealing the desires hidden behind the magician’s facade but also effortlessly shifting between the personas of his older brother Park Jae-hyung—who had a limp and a pale complexion.
In particular, Son Woo-hyun created dramatic tension through his meticulous portrayal of a character who, even as the net of the investigation closed in, attempted to deceive the detectives by pretending to be his older brother, Park Jae-hyung. While conveying the older brother’s backstory—having become paraplegic due to his younger brother’s drunk-driving accident—he naturally linked the moment his true identity was exposed with his self-centered true nature through subtle shifts in his facial expressions.
In particular, during the diversionary operation scene, Son Woo-hyun was tricked by the detectives’ ruse, stood up declaring, “I am Park Jae-ha,” and delivered a decisive plot twist with a look of confusion and bewilderment. Later, during the police interrogation and his detention at the detention center, Son Woo-hyun meticulously portrayed the character’s selfish nature as he justified his actions with a calm demeanor.
By bringing these two characters—who share the same face but have completely different personalities and backstories—to life in a multidimensional way, he demonstrated his wide acting range.
Son Woo-hyun, who debuted in 2009 as a member of the boy band Samchongsa, made his second debut in 2011 as part of the five-member boy band X-5. After the group disbanded, Son Woo-hyun, having completed his military service, transitioned to acting and appeared in the 2016 film *The Butterfly Effect*.
In addition, he has taken on a variety of roles in dramas such as *Live*, *Mung Bean Flower*, *The Tale of the Nine-Tailed Fox*, *Mouse*, *OK!
