On the 1st, the KOFIC launched the “Special Committee on the Sustainable Development of the Korean Film Industry” (Special Committee) and held its first official meeting at the Seoul Film Education Support Center.
This Special Committee is the result of a joint effort by the KOFIC and film industry stakeholders to restore the ecosystem for creation, production, investment, and distribution in Korean cinema and to develop effective policy alternatives through active communication with professionals in the field. In particular, the launch of this Special Committee is highly significant as it takes the KOFIC’s ongoing efforts to engage with the field to the next level, institutionalizing it as a permanent consultative structure rather than a one-time roundtable discussion.
Composed of four KOFIC commissioners, including Chairman Han Sang-jun, and private-sector members with expertise in the film industry, the Special Committee is scheduled to operate until December 31 of this year.
At the first meeting held that day, the members elected KOFIC Chairman Han Sang-jun and Kim Jo-gwang-su, co-representative of the Film Festival Policy Group, as co-chairs through a vote among the members. Moving forward, the committee plans to carry out multifaceted activities to address pressing issues in the film industry swiftly and effectively, including: △ restoring a virtuous cycle in the ecosystem and stimulating investment; △ expanding the base of film audiences; △ improving financial and institutional frameworks; and △ enhancing the creative environment.
The Special Committee will not limit itself to regular meetings but will also continue outreach efforts to gather firsthand feedback from the field. On the 22nd, it plans to hold a public hearing titled “Exploring New Governance for Film and Video in the Platform Era” at the Korean Film Archive to engage in in-depth discussions with film and video professionals regarding the future of Korean cinema and strategies for its development amid a rapidly changing environment.
Co-Chair Han Sang-jun stated, “The launch of this Special Committee is a sincere step toward building a sustainable future for Korean cinema together with filmmakers,” adding, “Going forward, we will listen to the voices from the field without reservation through regular meetings and public hearings, and actively reflect them in concrete policies to lead the Korean film industry to a new leap forward.”
Co-Chairman Kim Jo-gwang-su remarked, “I hope that with the launch of this Special Committee, the film industry and the Korean Film Council will once again become ‘one team’ to work together to address challenges and find solutions for the benefit of the Korean film industry.”
