[Edaily Reporter Kim Min-jung ] As BLACKPINK’s Jennie unveils her first co-designed collection with Adidas, controversy surrounding Adidas’s local advertising campaign in Israel is now spilling over to Jennie.

According to foreign media reports on the 9th (local time), some international netizens are demanding that the collaboration be halted by leaving comments such as “Free Palestine” and “Boycott Adidas” on Jennie’s social media posts announcing the Adidas partnership.

Jennie recently unveiled her first co-designed collection with Adidas, “adidas Originals by JENNIE.” She was directly involved in both the product design and the campaign production process for this collaboration.

The controversy did not stem from Jennie’s collection but from a separate “Single Shoe” promotion that Adidas ran in Israel.

“Single Shoe” is a service that allows customers—such as those with amputations—who need only one shoe to purchase a single shoe for half the price of a full pair.

Adidas cast Shalev Biton, who has served in the Israeli military, as the local advertising model. Biton is reported to have lost his left leg in 2021 during military service due to an anti-tank missile attack launched from the Gaza Strip.

This decision drew criticism, particularly from pro-Palestinian activists. They argued that it was inappropriate to feature a former Israeli soldier in the campaign given that many residents in the Gaza Strip are losing limbs due to the war there.

Spanish actor Javier Bardem also criticized the ad on social media, and calls for a boycott of Adidas continued to circulate online.

Around the same time, Jenny’s social media accounts—where she announced her collaboration with Adidas—have also been flooded with protest comments. Some netizens left messages of support for Palestine or demanded that she sever ties with Adidas.

However, Jennie did not participate in or have any involvement in the production of the controversial Israeli ad. Jennie’s collection and the “Single Shoe” promotion are separate projects.

As the controversy persisted, Adidas issued an apology on the 7th. An Adidas spokesperson stated, “We recognize that the image in question has caused concern,” adding, “We did not intend to cause offense.”
