[Edaily Starin YUN GI BACK Reporter] As the shortage of available venues at medium- and large-sized concert halls in Seoul worsens, Seoul Arena—scheduled to open next year—is gaining attention as a new alternative. Since it is a specialized venue designed primarily for popular music concerts, there is keen interest in how much of the demand for K-pop world tours and major concerts by international artists visiting Korea it will be able to accommodate.

According to Kakao on the 11th, Seoul Arena, located in Chang-dong, Dobong-gu, Seoul, is a multi-purpose cultural complex designed primarily for popular music concerts. The main arena can accommodate up to 28,000 people depending on the performance format, and a medium-sized venue with a capacity of approximately 7,000 is also scheduled to operate alongside it.
The growing shortage of performance venues is a key reason why Seoul Arena is drawing attention. Following prolonged disruptions in the use of the Olympic Park Handball Stadium and the start of remodeling at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium, the number of venues in Seoul capable of hosting medium- to large-scale performances has significantly decreased.
While demand for venue rentals has surged at venues like K-Sport Dome and Gocheok Sky Dome, and alternatives such as KINTEX and Inspire Arena are being discussed, they come with significant costs and accessibility challenges. There is also a structural limitation: since many existing large-scale performance venues double as sports facilities, the number of weekends available for performances is reduced when they conflict with sports schedules.
Seoul Arena stands out as a concert-focused facility that is relatively less affected by sports schedules. Recently, it began accepting the first official booking requests from concert promoters and entertainment companies for performances in the second half of 2027.
While the opening of Seoul Arena alone will not fully resolve the shortage of performance venues in the Seoul metropolitan area, the addition of a new, large-scale dedicated space focused on popular music concerts is clearly a positive development. It is expected to breathe new life into the Seoul concert market by absorbing a significant portion of the demand for K-pop world tours and concerts by international artists visiting Korea. If stable operations and a diverse lineup of performances continue in the future, there is ample potential for it to establish itself as a new “K-pop mecca,” following in the footsteps of the K-SPO Dome.
