[Edaily Starin Choi Hee-jae Reporter] Director Lee Chang-dong’s new film, “Possible Love,” won the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Award at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival.

The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) announced on the 12th via its official website that it had selected “Possible Love” as the winner of the Critics’ Prize among the feature films in this year’s Venice Film Festival Official Competition.
FIPRESCI described *Possible Love* as “a film that portrays the subtle power dynamics—exploring exploitation, class, disillusionment, love, desire, and the ownership and ethics of storytelling—in a multi-layered manner and at a perfect pace.”
This marks the director’s second FIPRESCI Prize, following *Oasis* 24 years ago. In 2002, when *Oasis* was selected for the main competition, the director received recognition for both the film’s artistic merit and his directorial skills, winning the Silver Lion for Best Director, the FIPRESCI Prize, and the Best Newcomer Award (Moon So-ri).
The five-member FIPRESCI jury selects the best film from both the official competition and the parallel sections, awarding prizes in two categories. In the Orizzonti section, which showcases innovative cinematic experiments, Xavier Terra’s *The Color of the Sun* was selected.
If “Possible Love,” which has been invited to the Venice Film Festival’s main competition, wins the Golden Lion—the festival’s highest honor—it will mark the first time a Korean film has done so in 14 years, following the late director Kim Ki-duk’s “Pieta” (2012).
“Possible Love” is director Lee Chang-dong’s first feature film in eight years, following “Burning” (2018). The film tells the story of two couples—Ho-seok (played by Sul Kyung-gu), a laid-off worker, and his wife Mi-ok (played by Jeon Do-yeon); and documentary director Ye-ji (played by Jo Yeo-jeong) and her husband Sang-woo (played by Jo In-sung)—who meet to produce a documentary and come face-to-face with each other’s different lives and hidden desires.
Following its selection as South Korea’s entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards, the film has been invited to major international film festivals, including those in Toronto, New York, San Sebastián, Zurich, Vancouver, and Busan.
The closing ceremony of the Venice Film Festival will take place in the early hours of the 13th, Korea Standard Time.
