[Edaily Reporter LEE JUNGHYUN ] HyundaiEngineering&Construction announced on the 18th that it will lead a government-funded project titled “Development of Design Technology for Large-Scale Water Electrolysis Plants of 100 MW or More,” spearheaded by the Ministry of Climate, Environment, and Energy. Through this project, HyundaiEngineering&Construction plans to secure the capability to integrate large-scale hydrogen production systems linked to renewable energy and strengthen its response system to market changes.
As the lead contractor, HyundaiEngineering&Construction is carrying out the project through a consortium comprising HyundaiEngineering, HyundaiMotor, Hanwha Global, Korea Midland Power, the Future Standards Research Institute, Seoul National University, and Korea University. Within this consortium, HyundaiEngineering&Construction is responsible for developing the basic design package and conducting a feasibility study.
Artificial intelligence (AI) solutions and dynamic simulation models will be applied during the design process. This is to address the output variability of renewable energy and ensure the stable operation of the plant.
HyundaiEngineering&Construction has previously accumulated technology in this field through projects such as the construction of a hydrogen production base in Buan, North Jeolla Province, and the development of a 5-MW plant-scale PEM electrolysis system in Jeju.
The HMG Construction Technology Research Institute (the integrated R&D organization of HyundaiEngineering&Construction and HyundaiMarine & Fire Insurance CO.,LTD.), which is carrying out this project, plans to continue research and development in the energy sector—including hydrogen, small modular reactors (SMRs), sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and offshore wind power—based on the technology acquired through this project.
A HyundaiEngineering&Construction official stated, “The results obtained through this R&D will serve as a core asset to enhance our competitiveness in winning future electrolysis projects both domestically and internationally,” adding, “The HMG Construction Technology Research Institute, which is carrying out this project, will consolidate HyundaiMotor Group’s core technological capabilities across the entire hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and utilization value chain to establish a Korean-style green hydrogen platform while solidifying its leading position in next-generation electrolysis-based hydrogen businesses.”
