"Company-wide Efforts to Overcome the Slump… New Release in 2027"
[Edaily Reporter An Yu-ri ] Webzen Inc.(069080)Webzen Inc.’s third-quarter revenue and profitability both declined year-over-year due to the lack of new titles. Webzen Inc. will unveil a demo version of a new webtoon-based game and showcase a new title based on its core intellectual property (IP), “MU,” at G-Star this month as it begins building its lineup for next year.
Webzen Inc. announced on the 6th that it recorded revenue of 36 billion won, operating profit of 5.3 billion won, and net income of 5.2 billion won in the third quarter of this year. Compared to the same period last year, revenue fell by 17.8%, operating profit by 29.3%, and net income by 40.1%. Compared to the previous quarter, they decreased by 5.2%, 4.7%, and 16.9%, respectively. The company explained that the lack of new game releases led to a decline in both domestic and international revenue.
Webzen Inc. will unveil the tactical strategy RPG “I Became the Tyrant of Defense Games: LAST STAGE” for the first time this month at G-STAR 2026. Based on a Naver Webtoon original, the game features “Diorama Pixel Art”—hand-drawn pixel graphics applied to 3D scenes powered by Unreal Engine 5.
Visitors can experience the game’s gameplay through a demo at the Webzen Inc. booth. The company aims to release the game in the first half of next year.
At the same event, the company will also premiere a cinematic trailer for the MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game) “MU Theos.” While maintaining the MU IP’s signature feature of rapid character progression, the game is being developed with a focus on enhancing growth content and competitive elements. Having recently completed internal testing, the company has begun preparations for a 2027 release.
Webzen Inc. is pursuing a so-called “two-track strategy,” simultaneously developing “MU Theos,” which targets the domestic MMORPG market, and “PROJECT G,” aimed at Western markets. PROJECT G is a hack-and-slash action RPG and is expected to serve as another pillar for the expansion of this long-standing IP.
Webzen Inc.’s development subsidiaries are also preparing sequels. Webzen Crevix is in charge of “Digem Bop: LAST STAGE,” while Webzen Redstar is developing “PROJECT G,” a new MU IP title based on Unreal Engine 5 designed with the Western market in mind. Webzen Inc. plans to disclose detailed release schedules in accordance with the completion status and business timelines of each project.
Kim Tae-young, CEO of Webzen Inc., stated, “We are making company-wide efforts to overcome the slump caused by delays in new game releases,” adding, “While focusing on providing development support to our subsidiaries, we will continue to devise self-help measures to secure mid- to long-term growth, such as expanding our overseas business models.”
