[Edaily Reporter SOYEON KIM ] “When will the 32-inch StandbyMe be released? I’m looking forward to it.”

This was one of the most frequently asked questions LGELECTRONICS developers heard while planning the “StandbyMe 2 Max.” Customers who had actually used StandbyMe consistently requested improvements in screen size and resolution. LGELECTRONICS decided to increase the screen size from the existing 27 inches and adopt 4K resolution. The company enlarged the screen and increased the resolution while maintaining StandbyMe’s core identity.

Earlier this month, the three developers of the LGELECTRONICS StandbyMe 2 Max emphasized in an interview with E-Daily that “StandbyMe is created together with customers.” Kim Seung-beom, Principal Researcher at LGELECTRONICS’ Display Business Division; Han Jae-young, Principal Researcher at LGELECTRONICS’ Display Business Division; and Park Ji-won, Principal Researcher at LGELECTRONICS’ MS Design Research Lab, were responsible for hardware, mechanical design, and design, respectively.

StandbyMe, widely recognized for pioneering the portable display market, evolved last April into the “StandbyMe 2 Max,” featuring a 32-inch screen. With a screen approximately 40% larger than the previous 27-inch model, power consumption has also increased. Senior Researcher Kim explained, “We didn’t just make the screen bigger; we worked hard to maintain the core user experience of a portable product,” adding, “We developed it with the goal of ‘ensuring users can watch at least one movie.’” The device was designed to accommodate a high-capacity battery, securing a maximum usage time of 4 hours and 30 minutes.

As they increased the screen size to 32 inches, the development team’s greatest challenge was not simply enlarging the display. This is because as the screen grew larger and heavier, the load on the hinge supporting the display also increased. To withstand this, they needed to enlarge the base, but the larger the base became, the harder it was to maintain the StandbyMe’s signature minimalist design. A senior researcher said, “We debated even the most minute, invisible details intensely,” adding, “We focused on designing a sturdy structure that could withstand the load while reducing the base size by even 1 mm or 2 mm.”

The stand on the 32-inch model is also 2 cm longer than the previous version. The development team recognized that this 2 cm difference could significantly impact usability when the product is placed on a dining table or desk, so they took ergonomic considerations into account as well. They refined every detail of the product, from the “Calming Beige” color—which embodies the StandbyMe’s identity—to the discreet placement of the light sensor and reception sensor.

In particular, StandbyMe has evolved by actively incorporating customer feedback into product development. Senior Researcher Park said, “We analyzed data from over 2,000 customer reviews and gathered feedback through internal and external advisory groups as well as the StandbyMe Café.”

Based on this, the team also focused on personalization. Senior Researcher Park explained, “Some customers refer to StandbyMe as a ‘companion appliance’ because it’s a display that lets you showcase your personal taste,” adding, “We designed it so it can be moved anywhere in the home and used to suit individual tastes and spaces.”

Personalization utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) features is cited as the key direction for the next-generation StandbyMe. The development team explained that they are exploring ways to provide personalized content and services by expanding AI capabilities while preserving StandbyMe’s core identity, which is defined by its design, portability, and touch interface.
