SamsungElectronics' LPDDR6 Is the First in the Industry to Be Validated on Qualcomm's Next-Generation Platform
Accelerating the Push into the On-Device AI Memory Market
Engaged in technical collaboration with Qualcomm from the early stages of development
Memory Expansion, Including SoC-on-Chip 2 and LPDDR-PIM
[Edaily SOYEON KIM Reporter] SamsungElectronics is accelerating its push into the on-device artificial intelligence (AI) memory market by validating its low-power memory, LPDDR6, on Qualcomm’s “Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme 6th Generation” platform.
SamsungElectronics announced on the 23rd that it has become the first in the industry to validate that 16GB LPDDR6 operates at an input/output (I/O) speed of up to 10.7 Gbps (gigabits per second) on Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon platform.
This validation was achieved based on the technical collaboration between SamsungElectronics and Qualcomm that has continued since the early stages of LPDDR6 development. With next-generation mobile platforms in mind, the two companies have been working to optimize the interaction between memory and processors from the very beginning of product development. SamsungElectronics explained that through this validation, it confirmed the performance, stability, and overall product quality of LPDDR6 in a real-world platform environment. SamsungElectronics LPDDR6 (Photo: SamsungElectronics) In 2022, the company completed operational verification of LPDDR5X on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon mobile platform, and in 2024, it became the first in the industry to verify 10.7 Gbps LPDDR5X on MediaTek’s flagship mobile application processor (AP), the “Dimensity 9400.”
LPDDR6 is a next-generation mobile memory that simultaneously enhances both high performance and low power consumption. SamsungElectronics’ 16GB LPDDR6 provides a maximum memory bandwidth of 114GB per second, reducing data bottlenecks between the processor and memory and enabling faster processing of data required for AI computations.
Power efficiency has also been improved. By applying technologies that dynamically control power consumption based on AI computation volume and system load, power efficiency has been improved by up to 21% compared to the previous-generation LPDDR5X. SamsungElectronics explains that as generative AI and on-device AI features expand in mobile devices such as smartphones, the importance of memory technology that minimizes battery consumption—in addition to delivering high performance—is growing.
SamsungElectronics’ strategy is to expand the use of LPDDR6 beyond mobile memory to the broader AI ecosystem. By leveraging LPDDR’s high bandwidth and power efficiency, the company is broadening its applications to include AI PCs and edge devices, while also integrating related technologies into server memory modules and in-memory computing technologies.
Notably, SamsungElectronics is targeting the AI data center memory market with SOCAMM2, an LPDDR-based server module. The company is also developing technologies that combine memory and computing functions, such as LPDDR-PIM, to expand its technological scope toward enhancing the power efficiency and data processing performance of AI data centers.
According to market research firm Omdia, the share of LPDDR6 in total LPDDR shipments is projected to grow from 3% next year to 39% by 2030. As of the first quarter of this year, SamsungElectronics holds a 43% market share in the mobile DRAM market, maintaining its position as the global leader.
SamsungElectronics plans to use this Qualcomm platform validation as an opportunity to expand its collaboration with major system-on-chip (SoC) manufacturers and strengthen its position in the next-generation LPDDR market.
