Recovering Precious Metals from Used Batteries for Recycling
340,000 Used Batteries Collected Since the Start of 2022
[Edaily Reporter Choi Oh-hyun ] LGELECTRONICS is launching a campaign to collect and recycle used batteries from cordless vacuums. Consumers who return used batteries will receive a discount when purchasing a new product. From October 1 to November 30, LGELECTRONICS is running “Battery Turn,” a resource recycling campaign that offers discounts on new batteries when customers return used cordless vacuum cleaner batteries, regardless of the manufacturer. (Photo: LGELECTRONICS) LGELECTRONICS announced on the 2nd that, with the support of the Ministry of Climate, Energy, and Environment, it is jointly conducting “Battery Turn”—its second used cordless vacuum cleaner battery collection campaign of the year—with the Korea Environment Corporation and E-Circular Governance.
The campaign runs from the 1st through November 30. Customers can return used cordless vacuum cleaner batteries—regardless of the manufacturer—to LGELECTRONICS service centers nationwide. For those unable to visit a service center, contactless participation via the LGELECTRONICS online brand shop is also available. By returning a used battery, customers can purchase LG CordZero A9, A9S, or A7 cordless vacuum cleaner batteries at a discounted price.
LGELECTRONICS disassembles the collected used batteries to recover rare metals such as nickel, lithium, cobalt, and manganese. From a single used LG Corp. CordZero A9S battery, weighing approximately 450g, 31.91g of nickel, 6.06g of lithium, 4.21g of cobalt, and 2.04g of manganese can be recovered. In other words, recycling 1,500 used batteries provides enough lithium to manufacture the battery for one mid-size electric vehicle.
From the campaign’s launch in 2022 through the first half of this year, a cumulative total of approximately 156 metric tons—or 340,000—used batteries have been collected. The amount of rare metals recovered through this effort has also exceeded 13 metric tons. The cumulative number of participating customers has surpassed 200,000.
Participation is also gradually increasing. The number of participants, which was about 12,000 in the first year, more than quadrupled to over 50,000 last year. In the first campaign of this year, about 30,000 people participated, returning approximately 29 metric tons—or 64,000—used batteries. The collection volume increased by about 10 metric tons compared to the same period last year.
LGELECTRONICS is reinvesting the proceeds from recovering and recycling rare metals from used batteries back into the local community. On the 1st of this month, the company used funds raised through the campaign to donate 15 LG CordZero AI Objet Collection A9 cordless vacuums to the Pine Tree Home children’s welfare facility.
The company is also expanding its collection of waste appliances, including the “Battery Turn” program. Last year, LGELECTRONICS collected 640,000 metric tons of waste electronics across 91 regions in 56 countries worldwide. The cumulative collection volume since 2006 has reached 5.65 million metric tons. Last year, the waste recycling rate at its domestic and international facilities was 97.3%, already exceeding the 2030 target of 95%.
Son Chang-woo, Head of the Living Solutions Business Division at LGELECTRONICS, said, “We will contribute to building a sustainable future by expanding resource recycling initiatives that customers can easily participate in.”
