President Lee made these remarks that morning via his X (formerly Twitter) account, saying, “We will lower the barriers to welfare so that citizens do not miss out on necessary benefits due to lack of awareness or an inability to apply.”
President Lee said, “Now, the government will take the initiative even without an application,” indicating a shift from a welfare system where benefits are received only after application to one where the government proactively identifies and provides support. He cited a news article reporting that six amendments to relevant laws aimed at improving the application-based welfare system were passed by the National Assembly plenary session on the 1st.
Until now, even those eligible for welfare benefits found it difficult to receive them unless they applied directly. However, with the amendment of the relevant laws, the government will now be able to use information it holds to verify eligibility and proactively provide welfare benefits to eligible recipients.
