President Lee: "Reforms Are for the People and the Nation… Not for Political Gain"
"It should not be used as a means to showcase one’s distinctiveness or to attack others," on X
"We Will Steadfastly Push Forward with Pragmatic Reforms"
[Edaily Reporter Kim In-kyoung ] President Lee Jae-myung stated on the 4th, “We will steadfastly push forward with practical reforms that truly improve the lives of the people.”
President Lee made this statement on his social media account on X (formerly Twitter) that day, saying, “Reform is done for the people and the nation, not for someone’s political achievements or applause.”
He went on to argue, “Reform must be an end in itself; it must not be a means to project a clear stance, attract attention, or attack others.”
He also added, “Reform must lead to tangible results that contribute to improving people’s livelihoods and national development; it must not be so focused on making a splash that it hinders the achievement of results.”
This is interpreted as a response to recent criticism from hardliners within the ruling party—including Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Mi-ae and author Yoo Si-min—who have labeled President Lee’s pragmatic reform agenda as political compromise.
Previously, on the 27th of last month, President Lee also posted on X, stating, “Reform does not happen automatically just because we impeached an anti-national president and elected a new one,” and added, “Impeachment merely prevented regression and collapse, and the election of a new president is not the end of reform but its beginning.”
He continued, “Reform requires momentum, and that momentum comes from the people,” adding, “It is difficult to expect that those who use reform as a means to pursue private interests, or groups that stand to lose their vested interests due to reform, will contribute to the reform effort or support and back its proponents.”
At a Cabinet meeting held on the 29th of the same month, he asserted, “We can never halt this reform simply because there is significant resistance or backlash,” adding, “Reform that changes the lives of the people and brightens the nation’s future is the very identity and raison d’être of our administration.”
He also said, “No matter how difficult or arduous it may be, I will certainly fulfill the mission entrusted to us by our sovereign citizens to carry out irreversible reforms across society.”
