(Photo courtesy of SamsungElectroMechanics) SamsungElectroMechanics announced on the 13th that it will hold its first in-house hackathon from the 13th to the 16th—a four-day event at its Suwon campus—utilizing “SEMCo-Work,” a generative AI platform developed in-house.
The name “SEMCo-Work” combines “SEMCO,” the English acronym for SamsungElectroMechanics, with “Co-work,” which signifies collaboration. It is an agent-based AI platform that enhances interoperability between existing internal systems and AI while ensuring security through the company’s internal servers.
A total of 200 employees will participate in this event, forming 100 teams of two members each. Employees will identify time-consuming or repetitive procedures in their respective roles and develop AI agents capable of automating them.
Reflecting the nature of manufacturing companies—which handle a wide range of tasks from product development to production, quality control, and customer service—the competition focuses on creating deliverables that can be immediately applied to actual operations rather than simply proposing ideas.
One participating team is developing an agent that manages data generated during the development process and automates repetitive procedures—from information collection and inspection requests to system registration. A key feature of this agent is that even employees with limited development knowledge can use SemcoWork to implement the necessary functions.
Judging is divided into preliminary and final rounds. The five teams that advance from the preliminary round will be evaluated on their level of AI utilization, problem-solving approaches, and the feasibility of applying their solutions to actual work. To enhance the fairness and expertise of the evaluation, executives in charge of AI Transformation (AX) from Samsung affiliates will also serve as judges in the final round.

The winning entries will be honored at the company’s founding anniversary ceremony on November 2.
The AI agents developed during the competition will be made available to all employees after the event concludes. The company plans to gather feedback from actual users to enhance functionality and polish the agents, and projects with high practical potential will be implemented in actual business operations.
Jang Woo-seok, Executive Vice President of SamsungElectroMechanics, stated, “It is crucial for employees—who know the business best—to create the agents they need themselves and refine them together with their colleagues,” adding, “We will support everyone in utilizing Agent AI for their work and ensure that outstanding projects lead to tangible improvements in daily operations.”
Jang Deok-hyun, President of SamsungElectroMechanics, remarked, “The AI era is still just ‘January 1st,’” adding, “The experience of creating Agent AI tailored to their own work during this hackathon will serve as the starting point for ‘one Agent AI per person.’”
SamsungElectroMechanics also runs a quarterly “Agentic AI Contest” as well as contests for AI ideas and use cases. The company’s policy is to spread an AI-based work culture throughout the organization by encouraging employees to propose ways to utilize AI and share their experiences.
