[Edaily Reporter KIM YOON-JEONG ] The KOSPI rebounded from the previous day’s sharp decline on the 21st, closing up more than 3%. This is believed to be driven by buying interest centered on large-cap semiconductor stocks, fueled by strong earnings from U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) companies and robust domestic semiconductor exports. The KOSPI broke through the 5,800 mark during the session, and a buy-side circuit breaker was triggered in the morning.
Dealers are at work in the Hana Bank trading room in Jung-gu, Seoul, on the 21st. The KOSPI opened at 5,666.34, up 113.60 points (2.05%) from the previous trading day. The won-dollar exchange rate stood at 1,324.7 won, while the KOSDAQ index opened at 793.40, up 11.43 points (1.46%). (Photo = Newsis)

According to MP Doctor, the KOSPI closed at 5,735.66, up 182.92 points (3.29%) from the previous trading day. The index opened at 5,666.34, up 113.60 points (2.05%) from the previous close, and rose as high as 5,816.43 during the session.
At 10:51 a.m. that day, the execution of program buy orders on the stock market was suspended for five minutes due to a sharp surge in KOSPI 200 futures prices. At the time of the suspension, the KOSPI 200 futures index stood at 904.84, up 44.94 points (5.22%) from the previous trading day’s closing price. The KOSPI buy-side sidecar is triggered when the KOSPI 200 futures price remains more than 5% above the benchmark price for one minute.
On the stock market, retail investors and institutional investors recorded net sales of 1.1318 trillion won and 72.4 billion won, respectively. In contrast, foreign investors recorded net purchases of 664.6 billion won.
The rebound in the domestic stock market today was attributed to strong earnings from U.S. AI-related companies and the upward trend in domestic semiconductor exports. Overnight on the New York Stock Exchange, tech stocks underperformed amid ongoing concerns about the creditworthiness and profitability of AI-related companies, but they rebounded in after-hours trading following earnings announcements from SpaceX and Supermicro Computer after the market closed.
Kang Jin-hyuk, an analyst at Shinhan Investment Securities, stated, “SpaceX posted an earnings surprise with revenue up 161% year-over-year (preliminary revenue of $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion), and AI revenue surged 830%, accounting for more than half of total revenue,” adding “As revenue related to Superintelligence (SI) has grown rapidly—shifting away from the previous reliance on Starlink’s cash flow—this has allayed market doubts regarding large-scale capital expenditures,” he explained.
Strong domestic semiconductor exports also contributed to the rebound. From the 1st to the 20th of this month, total exports rose 105.4% year-over-year, while semiconductor exports surged 222.5%.
Lim Jeong-eun, an analyst at KB Securities, noted, “We need to pay attention to whether investor sentiment recovers following the earnings announcements by Meta Platforms and Tesla scheduled for the 22nd (local time) and whether the semiconductor supply-demand situation improves.”

Medical and precision instruments rose 5.44%, while electrical and electronics (4.98%), manufacturing (3.86%), retail (2.17%), construction (2.12%), general services (1.81%), finance (1.76%), and securities (1.66%) also posted gains.
