According to Nielsen Korea, a ratings research firm, on the 26th, the sixth episode of tvN’s “100 Days of Lies,” which aired on the 25th, recorded an average viewership rating of 9.5% and a peak of 10.4% based on nationwide household ratings, setting a new series high.
In that episode, Geum Seok-joong (played by Kam Woo-sung) was shot and killed by Sato Shin-ichi (played by Jin Seon-kyu), and Lee Ga-kyung (played by Kim Yoo-jung), who witnessed the incident, broke down in tears in the arms of Sato Hideo/Kim Tae-woong (played by Park Jin-young). Meanwhile, Sato Shin-ichi heightened the tension by ordering an investigation into Geum Seok-jung’s personal background while murmuring the name of Geum Seo-hee, who shares the same rare surname.
What changed Lee Ga-kyung’s mind—she had been planning to quit her role as an informant after witnessing Geum Seok-jung’s torture—was Yoo Philip’s (played by Lee Mu-saeng) plea: “Even if you don’t understand our cause, can’t you at least understand that person’s goals?” However, what changed Yoo Philip’s mind—after he had raised his gun, insisting that the “traitor” must be eliminated first—was Yoo So-ran’s (played by Kim Hyun-joo) assessment that Lee Ga-kyung had no intention of betraying them: “Now is not the time to try to kill that girl; it’s the time to persuade her and bring her back.”
Eventually, Lee Ga-kyung returned to Heewon and secured a promise from Yoo So-ran that the operation would be completed within a month and she would be sent to the United States. Yoo So-ran assigned Lee Ga-kyung the task of winning over Hideo Sato’s heart without developing any personal feelings for him. Lee Ga-kyung went to work with a renewed mindset and pretended nothing was wrong even in front of Hideo Sato, who was worried and apologetic about the previous day’s events. However, Fukuda (played by Kim Joong-hee) summoned Lee Ga-kyung once again to the interrogation of Geum Seok-jung as an interpreter. This time, Hideo Sato was summoned as well.
Fukuda claimed that Geum Seok-jung had specifically requested “Geum Seo-hee” even though other interpreters were available, but Geum Seok-jung, just like the day before, remained tight-lipped. In response, Lee Ga-kyung told Fukuda she would try to persuade him in Joseonmal (Korean) and subtly hinted to Geum Seok-jung that Yoo So-ran and she were on the same side. She also indirectly conveyed the fact that Yoo So-ran had survived the Gu-guk-dan’s Dongsung-dong operation, putting him at ease.
However, his colleague Na Byeong-sun (played by Gil Eun-seong) revealed everything to protect his wife, exposing even Geum Seok-jung’s true identity. Upon hearing that he was from “Gyeam-ri,” Fukuda recalled a past he had long forgotten, but he quickly regained his composure and sent Lee Ga-kyung and Sato Hideo on their way. Just as Lee Ga-kyung was about to leave the interrogation room with a heavy heart, Geum Seok-jung called out to him, “Geum Seo-hee,” and stopped him, saying, “If your wife is such a kind person, buy her a castella cake on your way out.”
A short while later, Sato Shinichi came to see Geum Seok-jung. The two men, meeting again after 13 years, found their circumstances and situations not much different from those days. “Mass murderer. The mass murderer who killed and burned my family, my friends, and the people of our village,” Geum Seok-jung accused, but Sato Shinichi showed not a shred of guilt. Just as their private confrontation was reaching its peak—amid Geum Seok-jung’s fury and Sato Shinichi’s indifference—two gunshots rang out in quick succession from nearby. Na Byung-soon and his wife had been shot dead.
Lee Ga-kyung and Sato Hideo, who were heading downstairs, were also overcome with shock upon hearing the gunshots. And the moment the third and final shot rang out, Lee Ga-kyung ran toward Geum Seok-jung’s interrogation room, despite Sato Hideo’s attempts to stop her. There, they witnessed Shinichi Sato’s retreating figure as he emerged from the room, along with Geum Seok-jung’s body lying on the floor, drenched in blood. Despite Fukuda’s brazen lie that he had died of sepsis caused by gunshot wounds, Lee Ga-kyung was overcome by a mixture of fear and rage.
Toward the end of the episode, Hideo Sato followed Lee Ga-kyung and took her trembling hand. Seeming reluctant to let her go alone, he accompanied her in a rickshaw and saw her off at her front door. Left alone, Lee Ga-kyung recalled Geum Seok-joong’s final moments and hesitated, unsure how to break the news to Yoo So-ran. Just as Lee Ga-kyung turned to leave the front gate, Hideo Sato—who hadn’t left yet—was standing there in the rain. “Ms. Geum Seo-hee, are you okay?” asked Sato Hideo. Lee Ga-kyung, who had been about to lie to him again, replied, “No, I’m not okay,” and the tears she had been holding back finally burst forth. Without a word, Sato Hideo embraced her and comforted her. As the two connected sincerely, it foreshadowed a change in their relationship moving forward.
“100 Days of Lies” is a 100-day espionage romance that unfolds when Gyeongseong’s top pickpocket—turned-spy—and an elite interpreter for the Japanese Government-General of Korea meet in the heart of the enemy’s territory. The series is gaining momentum through word of mouth, having started with a nationwide household viewership rating of 5.3% and rising to 9.5%.
