[Breaking News] AI Stocks Rebound on Anthropic’s IPO Filing… Nasdaq Rises 0.8%
Semiconductor Stocks Rise on Anthropic’s IPO Filing
NVIDIA and Micron Rise… Tesla Also Up Over 5%
Falling International Oil Prices Also Contribute to Improved Investor Sentiment
All Eyes on Big Tech Earnings and the Fed’s Interest Rate Decision This Week
[New York = E-Daily Seong Joowon Correspondent] The three major U.S. stock indices all rose on the 26th (local time). The initial public offering (IPO) filing by artificial intelligence (AI) company Anthropic revived AI investment sentiment, which had recently been subdued, leading to buying interest centered on semiconductor stocks. Falling international oil prices also provided a boost to the stock market. Investors are closely watching the earnings reports from major Big Tech companies scheduled for this week and the Federal Reserve’s (Fed) interest rate decision. (Photo: AFP) On that day, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index closed at 26,169.38 on the New York Stock Exchange, up 0.83% from the previous trading day. The S&P 500 Index, a benchmark for large-cap stocks, rose 0.70% to 7,676.77, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.28% to 52,361.58. The rally was driven by news of Anthropic’s IPO filing. Anthropic, the developer of the chatbot “Claude,” announced that it has filed a registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and plans to list on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “ANT.” Anthropic’s revenue for the first half of this year was $16.29 billion (approximately 21.6 trillion won), an increase of about 14 times compared to the same period last year. Consequently, AI-related stocks rose in tandem. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index climbed 2.8%. NVIDIA rose 2.4%, Micron rose 3%, and Broadcom and AMD rose 2.3% and 2.8%, respectively. AI infrastructure companies CoreWeave and Navius also posted strong gains. However, semiconductor-related stocks have recently been undergoing a correction due to concerns over the profitability of AI investments and rising borrowing costs. By sector, technology stocks also stood out. Among the 11 sectors in the S&P 500, the technology sector rose 1.50%, posting the highest gain. Industrials (1.40%) and cyclical consumer goods (1.11%) also rose by more than 1%. In contrast, communication services (-1.42%) posted the largest decline, highlighting sector-specific divergence. Tesla surged more than 5% after Barclays upgraded its investment rating from “Equal Weight” to “Overweight.” Meta, on the other hand, traded lower after announcing plans to issue up to $95 billion in shares to fund AI infrastructure investments. Falling international oil prices also supported the stock market rally. Brent crude futures dropped to the $114 per barrel range during the session, and U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also fell to the low $100s. As oil prices—which had surged recently due to concerns over renewed conflict between the U.S. and Iran—took a breather, concerns about inflationary pressures eased somewhat. Market attention is shifting to this week’s key events. Alphabet, Microsoft (MS), and Amazon are set to report their earnings. Investors are expected to assess whether massive AI capital expenditures are translating into actual revenue and profits. The Federal Reserve will set the benchmark interest rate at its Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on the 28th. The market expects the rate to remain unchanged at the current 3.75–4.00% per annum. The key question is how the Fed—which raised rates last September—will respond to inflationary pressures stemming from rising oil prices. U.S. growth and inflation data to be released on the 29th will also be key factors in gauging the future path of interest rates.
