According to the Korea Meteorological Administration on the 27th, a cold wave advisory is scheduled to take effect at 9:00 p.m. that day, primarily covering eastern and southern Gyeonggi Province, as well as the inland areas of Gangwon, Chungcheong, Honam, and Yeongnam.
Cold wave advisories are issued from October through April of the following year when the morning low temperature is expected to drop by 10 degrees or more from the previous day and be 3 degrees or more below the seasonal average.
In the Gyeonggi region, the advisory will be issued for Gapyeong County, Gunpo City, Icheon City, Anseong City, the southeastern and western parts of Yeoju City, and the eastern and western parts of Yangpyeong County.
In addition, cold wave advisories are expected to be issued for the inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, the East Coast, the inland regions of Chungcheong, Honam, and Yeongnam, Ganghwa in Incheon, and parts of Daejeon, Gwangju, Sejong, and Daegu.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration’s analysis, this cold spell is due to cold air from the north flowing into the country in the wake of a trough of low pressure that passed through northern China.
The cold will set in in earnest starting this afternoon. As cold air gradually flows in, daytime temperatures will range from 15 to 20 degrees, about 5 degrees lower than the previous day.
Consequently, on Wednesday, the 28th, morning lows will drop sharply by about 5–10 degrees compared to the previous day, with most regions nationwide seeing temperatures around 0 degrees. Morning lows are expected to range from -2 to 7 degrees.
In some areas, temperatures during the morning commute will drop below freezing. This is because morning temperatures will fall below freezing in northeastern Gyeonggi Province, the inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, North Chungcheong Province, and parts of the southern inland regions. On Thursday, the 29th, sub-freezing temperatures will continue, particularly in the inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, North Chungcheong Province, and the inland areas of North Gyeongsang Province.
Strong winds are also expected, so the wind chill will make it feel colder than the actual temperature.
Although no cold wave advisory has been issued for Seoul, it will be chilly there as the morning low on the 28th is expected to drop to 2 degrees Celsius. Paju will see temperatures drop to -2 degrees Celsius, while Dongducheon and Icheon will drop to 0 degrees Celsius; other areas in the Seoul metropolitan area, such as Incheon and Suwon, will hover around 3 degrees Celsius.
The Korea Meteorological Administration warned that, for the time being, the temperature difference between day and night will be very large—10 to 15 degrees Celsius—especially in inland areas nationwide, and urged the public to take precautions to protect their health amid these sudden temperature changes.
