KOLMAR KOREA announced on the 29th that it has successfully developed a “hyaluronic acid powder” formulation—which transforms hyaluronic acid, a leading moisturizing ingredient, into a powder consisting of spicule-shaped particles—and has obtained a patent for the related technology.
This marks the first time in the cosmetics industry that hyaluronic acid has been formulated into a powder consisting of pointed crystals. Spicules are a natural material in the form of microscopic needles derived from marine sponges. They stimulate the skin’s surface to aid in the absorption of active ingredients. The tingling sensation felt immediately after application has led to high expectations for its effectiveness, making it very popular. However, since it is a hard material that does not dissolve in water, concerns about skin irritation and the inconvenience of having to wash it off have been cited as limitations.
After more than four years of research, KOLMAR KOREA developed a process to solidify hyaluronic acid particles into hard crystals and refine them into sharp powder particles measuring 250 micrometers (μm). Similar to spicule, these pointed crystals come into contact with the skin’s surface to aid in the absorption of active ingredients; however, due to hyaluronic acid’s water-soluble nature, they dissolve directly into the skin without causing irritation.
It is also simple to use. Just dab the powder onto the skin and gently rub it in with your fingers. Since it dissolves on its own, there is no need to wash it off, and its benefits are sustained gradually over time. Test results showed that its moisturizing efficacy lasted up to 62% longer than that of a standard cream.
KOLMAR KOREA plans to launch new skincare products utilizing this hyaluronic acid powder formulation. In particular, the company intends to develop intensive skincare products by incorporating functional ingredients—such as retinol, centella asiatica extract, and allantoin—which are effective in soothing the skin and improving skin texture. Additionally, the company plans to expand the application of its newly developed hyaluronic acid technology to various formulations, including serums, creams, and mists.
KOLMAR KOREA’s strategy is to drive the sustained growth of K-Beauty by proactively developing innovative technologies through research and development (R&D) investments. A KOLMAR KOREA official stated, “We have successfully developed a new formulation based on the formulation stabilization and delivery technologies we have accumulated in the skincare field,” adding, “We will continue to lead the K-skincare market with innovative technologies that allow consumers to experience tangible skin benefits.”
