ISO 50001 is an international standard that specifies the requirements for establishing and operating an energy management system to enable companies and organizations to systematically manage their energy use and continuously improve their energy performance.
LG Uplus has been pursuing a wide range of energy-saving initiatives—including replacing equipment with high-efficiency models, optimizing the operation of cooling systems, and transitioning to renewable energy—to reduce energy consumption at its major facilities, including data centers. In particular, at its Internet Data Centers (IDCs), the company is expanding the use of outside air cooling and optimizing cooling systems, while also gradually improving the energy efficiency of servers and power equipment and replacing them with high-efficiency models.
Completed in 2023, the Pyeongchon 2 Center—comprising three basement levels and nine above-ground floors—has effectively managed heat generated by servers by implementing a high-efficiency cooling system that actively utilizes cool outside air from the design stage onward.
Furthermore, in response to the growing trend of high-heat-generating AI servers, the company is concurrently validating liquid cooling, a next-generation cooling technology. LG Uplus plans to demonstrate technologies such as “Direct-to-Chip (DTC)” cooling—which directly cools server graphics processing units (GPUs) with cooling water—at the Pyeongchon 2 Center, with the goal of significantly enhancing the cooling efficiency and sustainability of its AI data centers.
Building on this ISO 50001 certification, LG Uplus plans to continuously monitor energy usage at its major facilities and accelerate energy efficiency efforts by implementing high-efficiency equipment and AI-based operational technologies.
Lee Woo-jeong, Head of AIDC Operations at LG Uplus, stated, “This certification is the result of our efforts to systematically manage energy usage and continuously improve efficiency at our data centers and other key facilities,” adding, “We will continue to expand energy conservation and the transition to renewable energy to further strengthen our foundation for sustainable management.”
