Given the nature of outdoor festivals where large crowds gather in one place, the key feature is the full-scale application of network slicing technology to public safety management, going beyond simply increasing the number of mobile base stations.
KTCorporation has concentrated the deployment of 19 fixed temporary base stations and mobile base stations at Gwangalli Beach, major entry and exit points, and adjacent subway transit areas such as Gwangalli Station and Suyeong Station. While optimizing the output and direction of 5G and LTE antennas to suit the on-site environment, the company uses “W-SDN (Software-Defined Networking),” a wireless network automation technology, to distribute data loads concentrated on specific base stations in real time.
The focus of these measures is to support safety management by utilizing “network slicing,” a core technology of 5G SA. This technology divides a single physical 5G network into virtual networks for specific purposes, enabling the stable transmission of high-definition video from 15 on-site wireless CCTV cameras to the integrated command center. This system ensures a dedicated communication channel for safety monitoring, preventing video interruptions or delays even during peak congestion when visitors’ mobile data usage spikes sharply.
On the day of the event, the on-site command center will be linked in real time with the Network Control Center, and engineers will be stationed on-site to respond immediately to any unexpected on-site variables. Emergency power generators have also been secured in advance to prepare for contingencies such as power outages.
Jeong Seon-il, Executive Vice President and Head of the Network Operations Innovation Division at KTCorporation’s Network Division, stated, “We have reinforced the wireless networks at the event venue and along major traffic routes in advance so that visitors to the Busan Fireworks Festival can share their precious moments without any inconvenience.” He added, “The control center and the on-site command center will work closely together to ensure stable communication services until the end of the event.”
