Documentary on a Master Con Artist… 'You Can See Everything' to Premiere on the 9th of Next Month
A Look Back at the Three Years Leading Up to the Incarceration of Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes
Co-directed by A24 and Nathan Fielder… Breaks North American Documentary Box Office Record
[Edaily Reporter Choi Hee-jae ] The story of Elizabeth Holmes—a real-life figure who went from being a Silicon Valley legend to the central figure in a massive fraud scandal—is being released as a documentary film. Poster for the film “You Can See Everything” (Photo: Sony Pictures) Distributor Sony Pictures announced on the 6th, “The film ‘You Can See Everything’ is set to open in South Korea on December 9.”
“You Can See Everything” is a documentary film chronicling a three-year journey that began when Elizabeth Holmes—who fell from being an innovative Silicon Valley entrepreneur to a notorious fraudster who deceived the entire world—invited the documentary crew into her home 34 days before she was scheduled to begin her prison sentence.
Elizabeth Holmes is the founder of Theranos, the biotech startup that caused a global sensation by claiming it could diagnose hundreds of diseases with just a single drop of blood.
She once garnered attention as a promising Silicon Valley entrepreneur after raising approximately $945 million in investment funds, but she was convicted of fraud for deceiving investors once the truth about her blood-testing technology came to light. She is currently serving her sentence.
The film begins by capturing Holmes on camera just before her incarceration. The subtle tension between Holmes—who vows to reveal everything about herself—and the production crew documenting her every move forms the central axis of the film. Another key point of interest is determining how much of what Holmes shares on camera is actually true. Produced in secrecy for several years, the film garnered attention when it premiered at the 53rd Telluride Film Festival. Following its North American release, it achieved box office results that are exceptional for a documentary film. It grossed approximately $15.6 million in 855 theaters during its opening weekend. Excluding concert documentaries, this marks the second-highest opening weekend gross for a documentary film in history, following *Fahrenheit 9/11*, which was released in 2004.
On its fourth day of release, it topped the North American box office, and in its second week—with the number of theaters increasing to 2,655—it recorded weekend revenue of $18.73 million, an increase of about 20% from the previous week. In its third week, the number of theaters expanded to 3,243, and cumulative revenue surpassed approximately $63.88 million. It also achieved a 96% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 96% Popcorn rating.
The film also received widespread critical acclaim. *Variety* praised it as “a work that transcends the boundaries of a pure documentary and shines with a true spirit of inquiry,” while *The New York Times* hailed it as “a showdown between a con artist and a comedian over the contours of truth, reality, and knowledge.”
The teaser poster, released on the 6th, instantly captures attention with a close-up visual so heavily blurred that the subject’s face is barely recognizable. The indistinct face and grainy texture of the image spark curiosity about the identity of the figure who shook the world and the truth hidden behind it.
Coupled with the title “You Can See Everything”—which implies that “you can see everything”—this raises the question of whether Elizabeth Holmes, the fraudster who claims to reveal everything, will actually be able to reveal the truth in front of the camera. The teaser trailer, released shortly after, captures a scene where Elizabeth Holmes and director Nathan Fielder come face-to-face at home.
The subtle tension between the two perfectly conveys the film’s unique, eerie atmosphere, heightening curiosity about what Elizabeth Holmes will reveal in front of the camera and how much of her story is actually true.
