[Edaily Reporter Choi Hee-jae ] CJ CGV(079160)announced on the 6th that it posted consolidated revenue of 688.1 billion won and operating profit of 73.6 billion won for the third quarter of 2026. (Photo: CJ CGV) According to CJ CGV, consolidated revenue for the third quarter of 2026 increased by 18% year-over-year, while operating profit rose by 50.3 billion won. Operating profit surged by approximately 216% from 23.3 billion won in the same period last year, setting a new record for the highest quarterly operating profit in the company’s history. Pre-tax profit also returned to the black, reaching its highest level for the third quarter since 2016.
In South Korea, the company recorded revenue of 259 billion won and operating profit of 28 billion won. Revenue rose 32% year-over-year, while operating profit increased by 33.6 billion won, returning to profitability. The improvement in performance was driven by the success of Hollywood blockbusters and enhanced competitiveness in specialized technology theaters. In particular, the share of moviegoers visiting specialized technology theaters—such as SCREENX, 4DX, and IMAX—expanded from 6.7% in the third quarter of 2019 to 18.1% this year, contributing to revenue growth and improved profitability.
Its subsidiary, CJ 4DPLEX, also continued its growth momentum. Third-quarter revenue reached 42.5 billion won, a 25% increase year-over-year, while operating profit rose by 5.5 billion won to 9.0 billion won. Driven by the global expansion of ScreenX theaters and the box office success of *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, the global box office for ScreenX and 4DX reached $204 million, an increase of approximately 33% compared to the same period last year. Combined revenue for the two formats also rose from 31.4 billion won to 37.1 billion won.
In particular, *Spider-Man: A Brand-New Day*—the first Hollywood film produced using the “Shot for ScreenX” format—surpassed the previous record held by *Avatar: The Way of Water* in both ScreenX and 4DX, becoming the highest-grossing film of all time in those formats.
The company also achieved significant results in its overseas theater business. In China, revenue reached 80.1 billion won, with an operating profit of 6.6 billion won. Revenue increased by 12.3% year-over-year, and operating profit rose by 4.5 billion won. Despite a decline in the overall local film market’s box office, CGV’s box office grew, expanding its market share.
In Türkiye, the company returned to profitability with revenue of 41.4 billion won and an operating profit of 4.6 billion won. Driven by the success of *Odyssey* and the competitiveness of its special-technology theaters, revenue increased by 38.5% year-over-year, and operating profit improved by 12.2 billion won.
Vietnam recorded revenue of 63.1 billion won and an operating profit of 7.7 billion won. Although revenue declined slightly due to a base effect resulting from the success of the local film “Mua Do” last year, the company maintained its profitable trend. Indonesia recorded revenue of 24.0 billion won and an operating profit of 3.5 billion won. Although attendance declined due to factors such as an economic slowdown and volcanic activity, the company maintained an operating profit at the same level as the same period last year through cost efficiency measures.
CJ Corp. also contributed to the improved performance. Revenue reached 224.2 billion won, and operating profit reached 16.5 billion won, representing year-over-year increases of 9.7% and 1.4 billion won, respectively. Revenue growth was driven by an expansion in orders for the Smart Space AX business—including AI factories and logistics, as well as VFX and media AI—and increased transaction volumes on data and marketing platforms. Productivity gains and cost efficiencies achieved through an AI-native system also contributed to improved profitability.
CJ CGV projected that growth in its domestic and international theater business and specialized technology theaters would continue in the fourth quarter, driven by highly anticipated global releases such as “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Dune: Part 3,” both scheduled for release in December.
CJ Corp. plans to accelerate the expansion of ScreenX and 4DX theaters based on major contracts with key global theater operators. In South Korea, the company will open a new ScreenX LED theater in Yeouido and renovate existing theaters.
Overseas, the company intends to strengthen profitability by expanding specialized technology theaters, securing content, and increasing non-screening revenue. In Vietnam, it plans to strengthen its business capabilities spanning content production, investment, and distribution, while in Indonesia, it aims to boost profitability by expanding specialized technology theaters such as ScreenX, securing differentiated content, and developing F&F offerings.
In China, the company plans to expand non-theatrical revenue—such as alternative content screenings, advertising, and partnerships—while continuing to improve its business structure by optimizing lease arrangements and operational efficiency. In Türkiye, the company will continue to improve its profit structure through content sourcing, expansion of non-theatrical revenue, and optimization of fixed costs, alongside performance growth driven by the release of major blockbusters during peak seasons.
CJ Corp. plans to expand new orders for its Smart Space AX business—including AI Factory, logistics, VFX, and media AI—and strengthen the competitiveness of its Enterprise AX business.
Jeong Jong-min, CEO of CJ CGV, stated, “In the third quarter, we achieved our best third-quarter results since 2016, driven by improved performance in the domestic theater business, the global growth of CJ 4Dplex, and the expansion of CJ Olive Networks’ AX business.” He added, “Going forward, we will continue to enhance profitability by expanding the global reach of our specialized technology theaters, such as ScreenX and 4DX, and by strengthening the competitiveness of our domestic and international theater businesses.”
