(Photo: PKC) PKC announced on the 12th that it has begun full-scale operations at its Saemangeum Plant No. 1 and has entered commercial production. The first shipment consists of 20 tons of phosphorus trichloride, a key raw material for secondary battery electrolytes and high-performance antioxidants. The product was supplied to a fine chemicals company in the form of paid samples for approval, and the client plans to use it as a test material in its antioxidant manufacturing process. PKC plans to expand to full-scale supply following this initial shipment and the completion of quality verification procedures. Phosphorus trichloride and phosphorus pentachloride are materials for which there has historically been a high degree of dependence on overseas sources, such as China, and the need for domestic production has been raised to ensure supply chain stability. PKC’s establishment of a mass production system is considered significant in terms of securing a domestic supply base for key chemical materials. The company explained that it has secured a stable mass production yield through process optimization. It plans to expand its customer base to include domestic and international battery material and fine chemical companies in the future. PKC is also preparing to produce oxychloride, a raw material for next-generation battery additives, as a follow-up product. The company’s strategy is to strengthen its rechargeable battery materials business by building a portfolio of phosphorus-based chemical products that includes phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus pentachloride, and oxychloride. Yoon Hae-gu, CEO of PKC, stated, “The launch of the Saemangeum plant and our first shipment demonstrate our process technology and quality competitiveness,” adding, “We will strengthen our position within the global battery and fine chemical materials supply chain through expanded production and enhanced quality.” In the first quarter of this year, PKC recorded sales of 70.2 billion won and an operating profit of 5.0 billion won, representing year-over-year increases of 8.8% and 50.6%, respectively.
