The recently unveiled mass-production model of Atlas has been evaluated as demonstrating exceptional strength and balance control capabilities using only a minimal number of actuators. He noted, “In a video showing Atlas carrying a refrigerator, it moved the heavy load using not just its arms but its entire body, and demonstrated natural whole-body control through a kicking motion.” Analysts also note that progress is being made rapidly in securing “general intelligence”—the ability to autonomously learn and perform various tasks—which is key to the commercialization of humanoid robots. Researcher Kang explained, “Boston Dynamics is able to simulate millions of hours of robot training in a virtual environment in just one day and apply that training to actual robots in just one hour,” adding, “This signifies a significant narrowing of the gap between the virtual environment and reality.” He continued, “Strategic collaboration leveraging Google DeepMind’s AI technology and NVIDIA’s accelerated learning technology is behind these achievements,” and assessed that “Boston Dynamics is securing a favorable position in the competition to commercialize industrial humanoids.”
