The newly published *The Event Called Reading* was conceived based on reading data from 10 million members accumulated by Milli’s Library over the past 10 years. It analyzes new reader demographics and reading activities hidden behind the statistics of declining annual reading rates, and explores the essence of reading—which remains valid even in the age of artificial intelligence (AI)—as well as changing reading habits, across two volumes.
Volume 1, *“The Event Called Reading: How We Read in the AI Era, as Observed by Milli’s Library,”* introduces new reading patterns discovered amid rapidly changing trends. It explores the value of asking questions and engaging in deep thought through books in an era where AI provides instant answers. It also examines the evolving reading experiences of young readers through expanding access points such as e-books and audiobooks.
Volume 2, *For Those Who Still Read: Stories of Readers Encountered by Millie’s Library*, is a collection of interviews featuring diverse voices from within and outside the reading ecosystem. Through interviews with 11 individuals—ranging from bookmakers such as book designers and independent publishers to bestselling authors and general readers—it reexamines the value of books and the meaning of reading today.
Starting with the book’s publication, Millie’s Library is rolling out a variety of 10th-anniversary projects. In addition to premiering the documentary “Back to the Book: Bringing Reading Back into Daily Life,” the company has published a data report titled “We Are Friends of a Decade,” based on 10 years of accumulated data. It is also currently running the “Birthday Book Challenge” event, where readers receive book recommendations tied to their birthdays and share them on social media.
On September 3, the company will host a conference at COEX in Seoul under the theme “The Future of Reading: A Blueprint for Reading in the Heart of the AI Era.” Detailed program information and ticket reservations are available on Millie’s Library’s 10th-anniversary page. Early-bird tickets are available until the 6th of next month, while regular tickets will be on sale from August 7 through the day of the event.
Kim Tae-hyung, Head of the New Business Division at kt millie seojae, stated, “The act of reading represents both the history of reading that millie seojae has built with its readers over the past 10 years and a question looking toward the next decade.” He added, “Even in the AI era, we will reexamine the intrinsic value of books and reading, and expand the reading experience so that more people can discover the joy of reading in their daily lives.”
