[Edaily Reporter Kwon Oh Seok ] TONGYANG(001520)announced on the 16th that it will expand its high-value-added, eco-friendly ready-mix concrete business, “CarbonCure,” and maximize profitability through carbon removal credits. (Photo = TONGYANG) CarbonCure ready-mix concrete is a product that applies the carbon mineralization technology of CarbonCure, a Canadian eco-friendly concrete company. Its core process involves injecting liquefied carbon dioxide during the ready-mix concrete production process to permanently store it within the concrete. As the injected carbon dioxide reacts with the cement and mineralizes into calcium carbonate, the concrete’s strength increases by 5–10% while cement usage decreases by 3–5%. It is regarded as a leading eco-friendly ready-mix concrete that simultaneously achieves cost savings and carbon removal. TONGYANG has currently established CarbonCure ready-mix concrete production facilities at its Gimpo and Incheon plants, with cumulative production totaling 55,000 m³—39,000 m³ at the Gimpo plant and 16,000 m³ at the Incheon plant. The produced products are being supplied to major construction sites in the Gyeonggi and Incheon regions, and the company plans to continue strengthening its sales capabilities and expanding production capacity to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly ready-mix concrete. TONGYANG also plans to actively expand its carbon credit business alongside the supply of eco-friendly ready-mix concrete. Based on the data accumulated through the Carbon Cure process and its carbon removal performance, the company can issue and trade carbon removal credits; these credits are reportedly traded at prices dozens of times higher than those of standard emission-reduction carbon credits. In particular, top-tier carbon removal credits from Direct Air Capture (DAC) technologies like CarbonCure are said to trade at over $1,000 per metric ton. A company official emphasized, “Since we can generate additional revenue by linking our business to high-value carbon removal credits, we will actively expand our commercialization efforts in line with the global trend toward stricter carbon neutrality regulations.”
