Samsung SDS Launches NPUaaS Based on FuriosaAI’s ‘Renegade’… Full-Scale Expansion of Domestic AI Infrastructure Begins
SCP to Feature Domestically Produced NPU
Providing a Subscription-Based AI Inference Service
Support for Sovereign Cloud, Available to the Public Sector as Well
Expanding from GPUs to NPUaaS
[Edaily Reporter Kim Hyun-ah ] Samsung SDS (SAMSUNG SDS CO., LTD.(018260)) announced that it has launched a commercial service by integrating NPUaaS (NPU as a Service), based on FuriosaAI’s second-generation neural processing unit (NPU) “Renegade (RNGD),” into the Samsung Cloud Platform (SCP).
NPUaaS is a service that allows companies to access AI computing resources in the cloud via a subscription model without having to purchase NPU servers or build their own data centers. With this launch, Samsung SDS has expanded its service portfolio to include AI infrastructure based on domestically developed NPUs, in addition to its existing GPU-based AI services.
FuriosaAI’s Renegade is a domestically developed NPU specialized for AI inference. It is characterized by higher power efficiency and cost competitiveness compared to GPUs during the inference stage—where pre-trained AI models are applied to actual services to perform tasks such as generating responses, analyzing documents, and identifying images.
Samsung SDS has enabled customers to select and use as many NPUs as needed—such as 1, 2, 4, or 8—to match the scale of their AI services. This allows organizations ranging from startups to large enterprises to flexibly scale their AI infrastructure without the burden of initial investment, and to integrate it with various SCP cloud services, including high-performance storage, compute, and high-speed networks.
In particular, this NPUaaS is provided within Samsung SDS’s Sovereign Cloud environment, enabling public institutions and enterprises subject to strict security regulations to safely build and operate AI services.
Samsung SDS expects that the launch of this service will not only broaden customers’ options for AI infrastructure but also serve as a major turning point in expanding the domestic NPU-based AI ecosystem and building sovereign AI.
Lee Ho-jun, Executive Vice President and Head of the Cloud Services Business Division at Samsung SDS, stated, “The launch of this NPUaaS is significant not only because it introduces a new cloud product but also because it enables customers to utilize high-performance AI technology more flexibly and cost-effectively.” He added, “We will continue to expand our SCP-based services to lead the cloud AI ecosystem.”
