The Toronto International Film Festival is the largest film festival in North America and is considered one of the world’s four major film festivals, alongside the Berlin International Film Festival, the Cannes International Film Festival, and the Venice International Film Festival. In particular, the Platform section is the festival’s only competitive section, designed to highlight directors’ distinct creative visions and original cinematic worlds. Having previously introduced world-class films such as *Moonlight* and *Jackie*, *First World* has set a significant milestone as the second Korean film ever to be officially invited to the Platform section, following last year’s *Master of the World*. Still from the film *First World* (Photo courtesy of Etnine Film) *First World* tells the story of “Jin,” a 17-year-old living on an island with no land connection, who meets “Doo-jae”—who has returned to the island for his grandmother’s funeral—and, that summer, confronts a strange desire awakening within her for the first time. Director Yoon Dan-bi, who delicately captures the moment when a familiar world becomes unfamiliar, explained her creative intent, saying, “First love is not so much the moment love begins, but rather the moment one world ends and another begins,” adding, “I hope this film reminds each audience member of their own ‘First World’ that they have each passed through.” Actress Shim Su-bin, who has steadily built her filmography through the movie *The Road to Erase* and the dramas *Secret Gratitude*, *Girigo*, and *True Education*, has been cast as “Jin,” the protagonist of *First World*. Shim Su-bin, who is gaining attention for her fresh image and steady acting skills, is set to delicately portray the complex emotions of a seventeen-year-old girl becoming aware of desire for the first time in this film. Additionally, actor Kim Eo-jin joins the cast as “Do-jae,” the character who shakes up “Jin’s” world. A former model, Kim Eo-jin has made a name for himself through natural acting and nuanced emotional expressions in the web drama *That Sweet Guy* and the TV drama *Fragile*, and will make his screen debut with *First World*. Expectations are high for the fresh synergy these two rising stars will create. Director Yoon Dan-bi won the New Choice Award at the 45th Seoul Independent Film Festival, as well as awards at the 24th Busan International Film Festival, the 8th Muju Mountain Film Festival, the Bright Future Award at the 49th Rotterdam International Film Festival, and the Best Feature Film Award at the 19th New York Asian Film Festival for her debut feature film, *A Summer Night with My Brother and Sister*. “First World” is set for release in South Korea next year.
