[Edaily Reporter SOYEON KIM ] SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. has signed a contract with U.S. energy specialist Alpha Omega Power (AOP) to supply 1 gigawatt-hour (GWh) of energy storage systems (ESS). The contract value is estimated by industry sources to be in the hundreds of billions of won. Leveraging its local production base in the U.S. and its prismatic battery technology, the company is accelerating its expansion into the North American ESS market by securing a series of large-scale orders.
SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. announced on the 26th that its U.S. subsidiary, Samsung SDI America (SDIA), signed a contract with AOP to supply ESS solutions totaling 1 GWh. Combined with the volume from the first contract signed late last year, the total supply volume reaches 1.5 GWh.
AOP plans to deploy SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD.’s ESS solutions in a large-scale power project set to break ground next year in Texas.
The product to be supplied is the “SBB (Samsung Battery Box) 1.7,” an integrated ESS solution equipped with ternary (NCA) batteries. Production will take place at the Star Plus Energy (SPE) plant in Indiana, with delivery scheduled for later this year.
The SBB 1.7 features high-capacity, high-nickel NCA material, resulting in a 17% increase in energy density compared to the previous model, the SBB 1.5. Although the unit size remains the same at 20 feet (ft), it can store more energy. Operational efficiency has also been enhanced through the implementation of AI-based early anomaly detection and battery life prediction algorithms.
Safety has also been enhanced. The company has secured certifications including “NFPA 855,” the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) fire safety installation standard, and “UL 9540,” an ESS safety certification. Fire response capabilities have also been improved through the application of SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD.’s proprietary module-embedded direct injection (EDI) technology.
SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. is focusing on business expansion this year by securing a series of ESS supply contracts in the U.S. market. In particular, the company’s local production system and prismatic battery technology are seen as key factors in its ability to win contracts.
SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. is currently the only non-Chinese manufacturer of prismatic ESS batteries in North America. Prismatic batteries use a sturdy metal casing, offering advantages in terms of durability and safety. SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD.’s strategy is to expand its presence in the North American market by combining this technological competitiveness with its local production capabilities in the U.S.
The possibility of securing additional orders remains open. SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. is currently in discussions with several U.S.-based customers regarding ESS supply contracts and expects to secure additional orders in the near future.
Paul Choi, CEO of AOP, stated, “SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD.’s U.S.-made ESS will play a crucial role in our continued growth,” adding, “Through this second contract, we will also contribute to strengthening the U.S. supply chain that supports next-generation energy infrastructure.”
Fabrice Hurdley, Vice President and Head of the ESS Team at SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD.’s Americas subsidiary, said, “AOP is one of the fastest-growing independent power producers in the U.S.” He added, “Based on our differentiated technology and local production capabilities, we will continue to expand our business footprint in the North American ESS market.”
