[Edaily Starin YUN GI BACK Reporter] This summer’s movie lineup features an unusually high number of heavy-hitting films. “Okay Madam 2” perfectly fills that niche. It’s a movie where you don’t have to think too hard—just laugh—and where you don’t have to question plausibility—just enjoy the action. For two hours, it lets you temporarily forget reality, doing exactly what an entertainment film does best.

Released in 2020, “Okay Madam” was a hit despite the challenging conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to its lighthearted premise and action rooted in everyday life. As the sequel, “Okay Madam 2” maintains that familiar charm while shifting the setting to a luxury cruise ship, showcasing an even grander scale.
The film begins with Mi-young’s (Um Jung-hwa) everyday life, which is weighed down by conflicts with her teenage daughter, a jobless husband full of bluster, and a pretzel shop on the brink of closure. Her long-awaited cruise vacation suddenly turns into a hostage situation when Anya (Choi Soo-young), the leader of an international criminal organization, takes control of the ship, and Mi-young’s past—which everyone had long forgotten—resurfaces. As Mi-young’s hidden past—that of a once-ordinary housewife—is revealed, the film races full steam ahead into full-blown comic action.
The greatest strength of the “Okay Madam” series is, without a doubt, its blend of action and comedy. Even amid a succession of shootouts, hand-to-hand combat, and chase scenes, the film never loses its sense of humor. The exposition is brief, and the pacing is fast. Since it aims to be a thrilling action comedy rather than a serious spy thriller, audiences can simply let themselves be carried away by the film’s rhythm instead of trying to figure out every detail.

At the center of it all is Um Jung-hwa. In this film, she once again delivers action sequences without holding back. She drives the story forward by effortlessly pulling off everything from hand-to-hand combat and gunfights to underwater action. The refreshing thrill unique to spy action films, combined with her signature down-to-earth comedy, brings the character Mi-young to life in a more multidimensional way. Her no-holds-barred action and overwhelming presence are reminiscent of Hollywood action star Angelina Jolie. Uhm Jung-hwa’s presence as the leader of Korean-style comic spy action naturally gives rise to the term “Uhmjelina Jolie” (Uhm Jung-hwa + Angelina Jolie).
Park Sung-woong, Lee Sang-yoon, and Bae Jung-nam—who have been with the series from the start—add a sense of stability with their familiar chemistry, while the new cast members inject fresh energy. Park Jin-joo delivers the laughs with her deadpan portrayal of Seon-ah, whose obsessive-compulsive tendencies have reached extreme levels, and Ryu-woon heightens the tension as Ji-hoon, who holds the key to the plot twist. Choi Soo-young, who plays Anya—the leader of the criminal organization that has taken over the cruise ship—also strikes a balance in the action scenes with her intense charisma.

Above all, “Okay Madam 2” is a film with a clear purpose: to entertain the audience. Director Lee Cheol-ha’s stated intention—“I wanted to make the audience laugh, feel refreshed, and be happy”—is evident throughout the film. It neither demands deep interpretation nor delivers a complex message. Instead, it focuses on ensuring that, the moment viewers leave the theater, the phrase “That was fun” naturally comes to mind.
It’s a great, no-strings-attached choice for families visiting the theater during the sweltering summer. It offers a comedy that parents and children can laugh at together, along with thrilling action and heartwarming family bonds. It’s a “family popcorn movie” that can be easily recommended not only during the summer vacation season but also to families visiting theaters during the Chuseok holiday. Directed by Lee Cheol-ha.
