Plus M Entertainment, the investor and distributor of “Hope,” and Forged Films—the production company co-headed by director Na Hong-jin—issued a statement on the 29th expressing “strong regret” regarding the controversy surrounding Hwang Jung-min’s private life.
The “Hope” team drew a clear line, stating, “This is a case in which Hwang Jung-min was a victim of stalking, and legal action has already been taken.” They continued, “However, in connection with this, Ms. A is causing harm that constitutes obstruction of business by using maliciously edited content to send emails to both companies and ‘Hope’s’ partner companies, as well as repeatedly uploading and deleting posts slandering the actor and the film on social media.”
They continued, “Mr. A has shown signs of attempting to disrupt the film’s smooth progress, both during the preparation period leading up to its release and at a critical juncture in its box office performance,” adding, “This not only deals a blow to ‘Hope’s’ overall business but also maliciously tarnishes the efforts and reputation of those who have worked hard on the film.”
The *Hope* production team emphasized that Mr. A’s revelations constitute a deliberate attack on *Hope*, stressing, “We are actively considering legal action regarding the harm caused to *Hope* and plan to continue taking strong measures to prevent further damage.”
Previously, Ms. A raised allegations of an extramarital affair involving Hwang Jung-min via social media. Ms. A released messages exchanged with Hwang Jung-min and audio recordings, claiming that he had made romantic advances toward her.
Hwang Jung-min’s agency, Sam Company, stated on the same day regarding Ms. A, “She is a suspect in a stalking crime who has continuously harassed Hwang Jung-min,” adding, “Hwang Jung-min has filed a criminal complaint against her.”
They continued, “The court has imposed provisional measures, including a restraining order, on the suspect on three separate occasions and issued a summary order imposing a fine of 3 million won after acknowledging the stalking charges.” The agency also announced that it would take additional legal action on behalf of the company.
Hwang Jung-min, who made his debut in the 1994 musical “Subway Line 1,” established his reputation for solid acting through films such as “Waikiki Brothers” (2001), “YMCA Baseball Team” (2002), “A Bittersweet Life” (2005), and “You Are My Destiny” (2005), and later in “Unjust Deal” (2010), “New World” (2013), *International Market* (2014), *The Veteran* (2015), *The Wailing* (2015), *Deliver Us from Evil* (2020), and *Spring in Seoul* (2023), solidifying his status as one of Korea’s leading dramatic actors. Three of his films—“International Market,” “Veteran,” and “Seoul Spring”—have each surpassed 10 million viewers. He is currently appearing in “Hope.”
