Samsung Medical Devices Partners with U.S.-Based AccuRay to Expand into Radiation Therapy

[Edaily Reporter JAEMIN SONG ] SamsungElectronics and Samsung Medison are accelerating their entry into the therapeutic sector of the medical device industry by expanding their precision imaging diagnostic technology into the field of radiation therapy.
Samsung Medison CI. (Photo courtesy of Samsung Medison) SamsungElectronics announced on the 5th that it is pursuing a collaboration with Accuray, a U.S.-based company specializing in radiosurgery, to develop precision image-guided radiation therapy solutions.
SamsungElectronics’ medical device division, and Accuray recently signed a non-binding Letter of Intent (LOI). The two companies are exploring ways to integrate SamsungElectronics’ mobile computed tomography (CT) system, “BodyTom,” with Accuray’s robotic radiosurgery platform, “CyberKnife.”
BodyTom is a mobile CT scanner capable of capturing three-dimensional (3D) images of patients at the treatment site. CyberKnife is a surgical platform that uses imaging to locate tumors and delivers radiation via a robotic arm.
The two companies are focusing on combining Samsung’s high-resolution 3D imaging technology with Accuray’s image-guided robotic delivery and real-time motion management technology. The goal is to enable more precise visualization of the patient’s treatment site and surrounding tissues at the time of treatment, thereby supporting medical staff in making treatment decisions.
By incorporating the patient’s breathing, movement, and anatomical changes occurring during treatment into the images, the radiation delivery location and range can be precisely adjusted. The goal is to establish a patient-tailored treatment environment that delivers the necessary radiation dose to the tumor while minimizing the impact on healthy tissue.
The two companies are also discussing plans to present the direction and technical vision of this collaboration at the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) Annual Meeting this coming September.
Accuray CI. (Photo: Accuray) This marks Samsung’s second collaboration in the field of therapy. Last April, Samsung expanded its partnership with U.S.-based Histosonic, a company specializing in non-invasive ultrasound-based cancer treatment. The two companies are exploring ways to establish a precision image-guided treatment environment by integrating Samsung Medison’s “R20” ultrasound diagnostic device with Histosonic’s “Edison” Histotripsy treatment system in real time.
Histotripsy is a non-invasive treatment method that uses high-intensity focused ultrasound to remove tumor tissue. Following its foray into ultrasound, Samsung is now broadening its collaboration to include CT-based radiation therapy, thereby expanding the scope of its medical device business—which had previously focused on diagnostics—into the therapeutic domain.
Yoo Kyu-tae, Head of SamsungElectronics’ Medical Device Business Division and CEO of Samsung Medison, stated, “This is part of our strategy to expand next-generation medical imaging technology from precision diagnostics into the therapeutic domain,” adding, “By combining Acurey’s expertise in radiosurgery, we will implement personalized treatment solutions that reflect each patient’s specific characteristics and changes at the time of treatment.”
