PROJECT D1 is a “command strategy RPG” being developed by Webzen Crevic, a subsidiary of Webzen Inc., based on the IP (intellectual property) of the popular Naver Webtoon series “I Became the Tyrant of the Defense Game” (“D-Game Tyrant”).
Webzen Inc. is prioritizing its development efforts on designing and implementing “Project D1” using the “diorama pixel art” technique—a dot-graphics-based approach—to faithfully recreate the dot-graphics world of the original “Defense Game Tyrant,” where the protagonist is summoned.
Diorama Pixel Art is a visual technique that combines 2D pixel art with 3D spatial composition to emphasize detail and a sense of depth. By adding hand-drawn pixel art—with every step completed manually—to 3D graphics created using Unreal Engine 5, the team has brought the descriptions from the original work to life within the game.
To reconstruct the original work’s robust narrative within the game, the development team designed a game system centered on party-based combat. The episodes and plotlines from the original—which follow the protagonist through “exploration, defense battles, and territory management”—have been reimagined in *Project D1* as party composition, tactical operations, strategic character development, and command-based combat.
Webzen Inc. also unveiled select in-game screenshots based on actual in-game graphics, along with basic background illustrations. Players can get a sneak peek at scenes depicting the gathering of key characters from the original work, in-game combat sequences, and concept art for “Crossroad,” the fortress city that serves as a major hub in the game.
News of PROJECT D1’s development was first announced last December when Webzen Inc. revealed it had signed an IP licensing agreement with Naver Webtoon. The company plans to disclose specific game details and begin preparations for the game’s launch in the second half of this year (2026). Game information and the release schedule will be announced as development and business preparations progress.
“D-Game Boom” is based on the web novel of the same name, which depicts the journey of a protagonist—the only person to have ever completed a game of impossible difficulty—who becomes possessed by a character within the game and struggles to survive within that virtual world. Published on Naver Webtoon in 2022, the series continues to be serialized to this day and remains highly popular.
