The program operates by having young adults who have already experienced independence serve as mentors, building relationships with adolescents in child care facilities over a period of about three months. Rather than providing one-time support, the program focuses on offering practical assistance by sharing the experiences and information necessary for the transition to independence.
The mentors consist of recipients of Kyochon’s “Youth’s Dream” scholarship, while the mentees are adolescents from child care facilities. Following their first meeting on the 22nd of last month, they participated in a two-day, one-night exchange program on Jebu Island in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, starting on the 30th of the same month.
Participants enjoyed experiential activities together, such as riding the cable car and having a barbecue party, and shared the mentors’ experiences of becoming independent through the “My Independence Story” program. Based on this, the mentees also took time to flesh out their future plans for independence.
Kyochon plans to continue these experiential and communication programs, which share information necessary for daily life and independence, through September.
A representative from KKYOCHON FOOD&BEVERAGE stated, “For youth preparing for independence, it’s not just temporary support that matters, but also supportive relationships and practical information,” adding, “We will support these young people in settling into society stably by integrating scholarships, networking, and mentoring.”
Meanwhile, Kyochon has been operating a support program for youth preparing for independence in partnership with Green Umbrella since 2021. Now in its sixth year, the program has provided a cumulative total of 815 million won in scholarships to 281 scholarship recipients to date.
