[Edaily Reporter Han Kwangbeom ] SamsungElectronics(005930)Samsung Electronics has included Chopin’s masterpiece, performed by world-renowned pianist Seonwoo Ye-kwon, as a new ringtone for its next-generation foldable smartphones—the “Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8, and Flip8.” To commemorate the ninth version of “One UI,” its mobile user interface (UI) software, the company selected this iconic piece from Opus 9.
According to the SamsungElectronics Newsroom on the 14th, Chopin’s “Nocturne in E-flat Major, Op. 9, No. 2,” produced in collaboration with pianist Ye-kwon Seonwoo, has been included as the default ringtone for new devices running One UI 9.
This new ringtone was conceived to commemorate One UI 9. It draws symbolic meaning from the connection between the software version number “9” and Chopin’s “Op. 9.” By capturing the tranquility and lyricism of the nocturne, it adds a soothing tone to everyday alarms and notification sounds.
The recording took place at the “Samsung Galaxy Sound Studios,” a dedicated sound design facility located at SamsungElectronics’ Seoul R&D Campus. The performance by a world-renowned pianist was captured directly in the space where the Galaxy Sound identity is crafted.
A team of audio experts was mobilized for the production process. Directors Hwang Byung-jun and Jang Young-jae of “Sound Mirror Korea,” who have collaborated with Samsung in the past, handled the recording and mixing to bring out the subtle nuances of the performance. Additionally, tuning master Kang Hyun-gu refined the piano’s tone to optimize the resonance of every single note.
The pianist, Seon Woo Ye-kwon, is the first Korean to win the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2017 and holds the record for the most international competition victories in Korea. Seon Woo Ye-kwon shared his thoughts, saying, “The warm piano tone and the space with its natural resonance were perfect for performing the Nocturne,” adding, “It is meaningful to be able to capture the comfort conveyed by the music and the timeless emotion of classical music in the Galaxy devices used by people around the world.”
SamsungElectronics plans to continue strengthening the sound identity of its mobile devices. Nam Myeong-woo, a sound design specialist at SamsungElectronics’ MX Business Division, stated, “Since ‘Nocturne’ is a piece that celebrates the tranquility of the night, we hoped it would gently permeate every moment of the day with its soothing resonance,” adding, “We hope that encountering classical music in everyday life will become a special moment for users.”
